- A process centred perspective of the creative industries : an analytical model for managementPublication . Lima, Fernando Afonso Carrapatoso; Lourenço, Ana Isabel Príncipe dos Santos da SilvaThis dissertation adopts a process-centred perspective of understanding the economic model of the creative industries, so as to explore how can one build an analytical model that can be useful for improving management practices in those industries. The point of departure to address the research question was to review the debate around the definition of creative industries; then followed a discussion on the development of a framework for the understanding of the creative industries process-centred perspective; finally an assessment of the creative industries’ economic model from the management perspective was done via a value-chain analysis, in order to discuss the implications of the process-centred perspective for management and for public policy design. The research developed allowed the proposal of an analytical model that revealed the importance of operationalizing the understanding of value-creation through creativity in management practices. It also emphasized the challenge in balancing open-ended processes with the firm’s commercial purposes, by managing intangible aspects of the creative process and the engagement of the creative workers into the creative process. The analytical model developed may be helpful for managers insofar as it offers a disaggregation of the companies’ activities by focusing on the assessment of how the creative process can recursively occur in the company as a production process. Moreover it may help on the identification of the core-activities and the assessment of the main components of those activities. The research done intends to contribute to the understanding of how the creative industries work and to the development of good management practices in the sector. Thus, it also suggests that it would be interesting to develop research on a theoretical revision of the components of the creative industries’ economic model and on a proper comparative analysis of the model delivered at an inter-sector, an inter-temporal and at a subsector level. By advancing an analytical model for creative industries that is focused on its usefulness for management, it indicates areas of interest for empirical research.
- The impact of ‘Creative Industries’ definitions on subsector typologiesPublication . Pires, Bruno Miguel Teixeira Bento; Morais, RicardoBeing the ‘Creative Industries’ (CI) a growing economical sector, many studies have tried to define it as well as to identify it's subsectors. However, the discussion still remains as to whether the sector should be called ‘Cultural Industries’ or if these should be included inside the wider CI group. Other discussions debate how the CI should be identified. So, what are Creative Industries? What makes this sector different from other sectors? It is of vital importance to define this sector and not just enumerate possible subsectors, so that future mappings can provide us exact numbers on its extension and influence on economy, both direct and indirect. This study aims to contribute to the definition of Creative Industries by analyzing previous definitions, namely in terms of criteria and subsectors.
- The impact of business associations on business internalization : the APICCAPS casePublication . Lacerda, Joana Reid de; Morais, Ricardo AlexandreOrganizations today have to adapt to the complex global market of today. Internationalization stands today as a dominant strategy to fulfil business goals and gain value differentiation. Business Associations (BAs) are platforms who ensure internationalization strategies through an organized structure created to assist their associates. This study aims to understand the impact and influence that BAs on their member’s business internationalization. Based on a case of a BA, APICCAPS, in the Portugal shoe sector, the author intents to comprehend how, when, why does someone reach for BA’s. It is a fact that BAs have an important role in business internationalization; therefore the author saw the lack of study on this phenomenon as a gap, an opportunity to understand and share a Portuguese case in a valuable sector.
- The impact of disintermediation on independent music business modelsPublication . Bernardo, José Francisco da Cruz; Martins, Luís Gustavo Pereira Marques; Morais, RicardoThis work presents an exploratory study of how the disintermediation phenomenon, which has been occurring among the main economic agents of the music industry, is affecting independent musicians’ business models and practices. This phenomenon results from a shift in the technological paradigm, in which the access to global communication networks and digital tools has caused disruptive changes to the current production model, to the access conditions of producers to markets, and to the power relations between economic agents. This study locates within the creative industries scope of research, particularly in music business research. It aims to analyse and expose part of the work reality of producers in one of the most important sectors of the creative industries. Concerning methodology, this study adopts realism for its philosophical stance, in order to address the problem, by carrying out objective discovery and theory development, through objective descriptions of reality. Taking this into consideration, the chosen research strategy has been the case study. A set of seven independent music artists has been purposely selected, based on the strategic approach they take in business and in the evolutive path they are pursuing. Personal semi-structured interviews were conducted with five of these artists, in order to obtain information concerning their business models and practices, which provided the primary data for analysis. The data of the remaining two independent artists was obtained from mixed sources. Additionally, in order to complement this study, data reports from the Artists Revenue Streams (ARS) study have been used as secondary data. This study, led by the Future of Music Coalition (FMC) in the US, assesses whether and how musicians’ revenue streams are changing in this new music landscape. This study indicates that the effects of disintermediation, induced by a technological paradigm shift, are mostly observable in the way independent artists are becoming selfsufficient. They have been leveraging on technology to take on business functions, such as management, funding, distribution and promotion. However, concerning disintermediation, these functions reveal different levels of incidence. This is determined by the power that record labels, the traditional intermediary, maintain over financing and promotion. In the evolutionary path of an independent artist, the need for a professional structure typically grows along the way. This structure maybe maybe provided either by a record label, or by assembling a professional team or resorting to independent services. The consequences of disintermediation can be further demonstrated through some illustrative signs; record labels are readjusting, what can be seen through the renegotiation and the adoption of other contract models, and the lessening of investment in certain traditional business functions. Furthermore, the bargaining power of artists has increased, which grants them more control over their career direction, over the development of their brand, and most importantly, of their creativity.
