- Reducing financial uncertainty : impact on entrepreneurial intentions : an empirical study on the influence of financial security on the prosecution of entrepreneurial activities for generation zPublication . Rieker, Jan Klaus Udo; Ferreira, Duarte CardosoEntrepreneurship has the potential to stimulate an economy by introducing new technologies, products, and services that the market and legislators have not yet acknowledged. Due to the demographic transition, Generation Z is expected to catalyze new businesses, as they have grown up without constant digital access and have seen technology evolve rapidly. Their versatility enables them to combine traditional business strategies with innovative initiatives, improving the economy. Hence, the government must establish more suitable frameworks allowing this generation to achieve their business aspirations. The thesis examines the determinants of Generation Z’s entrepreneurial intentions (EIs) while considering the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). The core structure of TPB, consisting of the variables Attitude towards Entrepreneurship (ATE), Subjective Norm (SN), and Perceived Behavioral Control (PBC), serves as the foundation for elucidating EI. To deepen the comprehension of EI, the baseline model is extended by incorporating parental socioeconomic status (PSES), universal basic income (UBI), and concentrated universal basic income (CUBI), which is introduced due to qualitative research. The quantitative research results, backed by exploratory research, reveal that the fundamental model of TPB has the most significant impact on Generation Z’s EI. The external variables PSES and CUBI exhibit substantial influences compared to UBI, as they are more tailored to this generation’s requirements. The thesis underscores the relevance of targeted government measures to establish equal opportunities in entrepreneurship and foster further innovation.
- Trust in the FinTech sector : an analysis of existing challenges on building customer trust in financial sectorPublication . Łąpieś, Mateusz Jan; Latusek-Jurczak, DominikaNowadays the economy, including the financial sector are growing very fast. This is possible primarily due to the increasingly developed technology, which provides tools and innovations that are able to affect various industries. In the case of the financial sector, this is most visible in the area known as Fin-Tech. Entities offering various financial services, including banking, are increasingly basing most of their operations on modern technology. In some areas, they are competing with traditional financial institutions. Customer trust is one of the main challenges for these new companies. Main objective of the study will be to examine how the factor that is defined as "customer trust" affects the way FinTech companies function within the financial sector. For this purpose, the theoretical review was made in the paper, which addressed the key issues in this topic. It also conducted 2 studies - a quantitative survey with customers and qualitative interviews with experts to answer key research questions. At the very end, it was found, that the aversion of some users to technology and innovation will block their attitude to FinTech. According to experts, it will be a long time before young financial entities relying fully on technology will be able to gain the trust of customers at a level similar to traditional financial institutions. The paper offers recommendations on how traditional financial institutions should prepare for the technological transformation, as well as methods that FinTechs can use to accelerate building customer trust.
- The impact of extreme climate events on financial performance : evidence from manufacturing firms in EuropePublication . Denna, Pietro; Imperatore, Claudia; Revelo, JoséClimate change is one of the most significant challenges of our time, with profound implications for global economies, societies, and ecosystems worldwide. The scientific community is clear: human activities, particularly the burning of fossil fuels, deforestation, and industrial processes, have drastically increased greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, driving global temperatures higher and altering climate patterns. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) warns that without urgent and coordinated action, that global warming is expected to surpass 1.5°C over pre industrial levels by 2030, resulting in disastrous consequences for natural and human systems. The impacts of climate change are already evident worldwide, materializing as increasingly frequent and severe extreme weather phenomena such as heatwaves, floods, and storms. The impacts of climate change are already being felt, manifesting in more frequent and intense extreme weather events such as heatwaves, floods, and storms. These events pose substantial risks to various industries, particularly the manufacturing sector in Europe, which faces vulnerabilities in supply chains, energy availability, and production stability. This paper examines the impact of extreme climate events on the financial performance of private manufacturing firms in Europe. Using a regression model, it analyzes how different climate variables have affected the financial health and performance of European companies over the past decade (2013–2023), offering insights into the challenges posed by climate-related disruptions.
- A gain through pain : an event study on the invasion of GazaPublication . Morniroli, Luca; Revelo, José GarciaThis Thesis analyzes the influence of the invasion of Gaza made by Israel on the 27th of October on the aerospace and defence industry, using an event study. The research uses this methodology to examine the uneven returns of significant companies to assess market responses. The results indicate that there was initially a favourable response from investors, as evidenced by the increase in average abnormal returns (AAR) after the events and a positive significance around the immediate days of the 27th of October. This study enriches the existing body of knowledge, offering valuable insights into the influence of geopolitical tensions on market dynamics and adding new information in a delicate chapter, such as the Palestine and Israel situation. It emphasizes the importance of carefully considering such conflicts' immediate and long-term effects. The study provides valuable insights for investors and policymakers by highlighting the ethical ramifications of defence investments in the presence of geopolitical disputes, and it mostly makes people think about how, based on the suffering of people, there are sectors that increase their revenues.
- The effect of the inflation reduction act on the European financial marketPublication . Tüsfeld, Tim; Revelo, JoséThis thesis analyzes the impact of the US Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) of 2022 on the European financial markets. The study employs an event study methodology to examine the abnormal returns of companies listed on the Euro Stoxx 600 index around key legislative events related to the IRA. The findings reveal significant variations in market reactions across different sectors, with the energy and healthcare sectors showing contrasting responses. The study highlights that firms with higher greenhouse gas emissions experienced significant negative abnormal returns, indicating increased investor concerns about regulatory costs. Additionally, the research explores the role of foreign sales. It demonstrates that companies with significant international exposure exhibited different abnormal returns depending on the phase of the legislative process. This thesis contributes to the climate finance literature by providing empirical evidence on how US climate policies can have significant effects on foreign markets, highlighting the importance of sector-specific and firm-specific factors.
- Development of bioluminescent Group B streptococcal strains for longitudinal infection studiesPublication . Lorga, Inês; Geraldo, Rafaela; Soares, Joana; Oliveira, Liliana; Firon, Arnaud; Andrade, Elva BonifácioGroup B Streptococcus (GBS) remains the leading bacterial cause of invasive neonatal disease, resulting in substantial morbidity and mortality. New therapeutic approaches beyond antibacterial treatment to prevent neonatal disease outcomes are urgent. One significant limitation in studying GBS disease and progression is the lack of non-invasive technologies for longitudinal studies. Here, we develop and compare three bioluminescent GBS strains for in vivo pathogenic analysis. Bioluminescence is based on the luxABCDE operon on a replicative vector (luxGBS-CC17), and the red-shifted firefly luciferase on a replicative vector (fflucGBS-CC17) or integrated in the genome (glucGBS-CC17). We show that luxGBS-CC17 is suitable for in vitro analysis but does not produce a significant bioluminescent signal in infected pups. In contrast, the fflucGBS-CC17 results in a strong bioluminescent signal proportional to the organ colonisation level. However, the stability of the replicative vector depends on the route of infection, especially when pups acquire the bacteria from infected vaginal mucosa. Stable chromosomal integration of luciferase in glucGBS-CC17 leads to significant bioluminescence in both haematological and vertical infection models associated with high systemic colonisation. These strains will allow the preclinical evaluation of treatment efficacy against GBS invasive disease using whole-mouse bioluminescence imaging.
