- Dressed to kill : an experimental study on job descriptions and worker attraction in advertising market agencies in PortugalPublication . Sousa, Ricardo Homem; Moreira, Sérgio Paulo de JesusBased on the AMO framework, which has been widely utilized by researchers to assess the attractiveness of human resource practices, the proposition of incorporating a novel dimension, denoted as Sustainability, has been posited. This extension encompasses a suite of practices that contemporary investigations assert as pivotal determinants of employee attractiveness. Furthermore, drawing from a review of how researchers have utilized the AMO framework, a selection of human resource practices was undertaken for each dimension. For the new Sustainability dimension, practices were chosen based on their frequent citation by researchers as being crucial components of an attractive employer value proposition. A survey was conducted among the advertising agencies in Portugal to gauge the perceived value of bundles of practices by employees, using a policy capturing technique to simulate a decision-making scenario akin to that of a job seeker, rather than simply requesting participants to rate a list of practices. Additionally, a projective technique was utilized to mitigate socially desirable responses and capture nuanced details regarding which human resource practices hold greater importance within the dimensions perceived as more attractive by participants. The results did not yield statistically significant findings regarding the attractiveness of the dimensions; however, they indicated a tendency towards a preference for the Motivation and Sustainability dimensions (at a significance level of 10%). Conversely, the results concerning the most significant human resource practices within each dimension were statistically significant, revealing a notable emphasis on competitive salary, contractual security, work flexibility and employer-provided health support, including mental health.
- Synthesis, activity, toxicity, and in silico studies of new antimycobacterial N-alkyl nitrobenzamidesPublication . Pais, João P.; Antoniuk, Olha; Pires, David; Delgado, Tiago; Fortuna, Andreia; Costa, Paulo J.; Anes, Elsa; Constantino, LuisTuberculosis (TB) is a disease that plagues the frailest members of society. We have developed a family of N-alkyl nitrobenzamides that exhibit promising antitubercular activities and can be considered a structural simplification of known inhibitors of decaprenylphosphoryl-β-D-ribofuranose 2′-oxidase (DprE1), an essential Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) enzyme and an emergent antitubercular target. Hereby, we report the development of these compounds via a simple synthetic methodology as well as their stability, cytotoxicity, and antitubercular activity. Studying their in vitro activity revealed that the 3,5-dinitro and the 3-nitro-5-trifluoromethyl derivatives were the most active, and within these, the derivatives with intermediate lipophilicities presented the best activities (MIC of 16 ng/mL). Additionally, in an ex vivo macrophage model of infection, the derivatives with chain lengths of six and twelve carbon atoms presented the best results, exhibiting activity profiles comparable to isoniazid. Although the proof is not definite, the assessment of susceptibility over multiple mycobacterial species, together with the structure similarities with known inhibitors of this enzyme, support DprE1 as a likely target of action for the compounds. This idea is also reinforced by the docking studies, where the fit of our more active compounds to the DprE1 binding pocket is very similar to what was observed for known inhibitors like DNB1.
- To buy or not to buy a BEV : drivers and concerning factors influencing German customers purchase intentionPublication . Feller, Julian Niklas; Rita, MiguelThis thesis aims to analyse the current drivers and concerns that influence the purchase intention for electric vehicles in the German market. Based on a deductive analysis, factors were identified in the literature that are considered relevant indicators for the purchase intention of EVs internationally. These factors have not yet been analysed as drivers and concerns in this constellation in the German context, which led to the research questions about the connection with the purchase intention. In addition, demographic characteristics were considered and analysed for possible differences between the participant groups. The methods used included a sample of German residents as well as conducting semi structured interviews and an online survey to record attitudes. The statistical analysis included correlation analysis to assess the relationships between the determinants and purchase intention. The most important results show that the drivers and barriers for the purchase of EVs on the German market are in line with international findings and that there is a significant correlation between all variables and the purchase intention. Regarding demographic differences, no effects on the purchase intention can be identified. Limitations of this study include potential biases due to the sample size and the limited scope of the methods used. These findings help to deepen the understanding of purchase intention for EV and provide valuable insights for companies and research institutes to develop targeted marketing strategies. Future research could focus on validating these findings in different contexts and further investigating the impact of long-term trends on purchasing behaviour.
- Driverless taxis in Germany : a realistic future scenario? : investigating factors influencing the acceptance of level 5 shared autonomous vehiclesPublication . Otto, Julian; Rita, MiguelThis dissertation investigates the factors that influence the acceptance of Level 5 Shared Autonomous Vehicles (SAVs) in Germany's public transport system. As the automotive industry moves closer to fully autonomous vehicles, it is crucial to understand the complex web of factors that shape potential customers' perceptions and attitudes. A structured mixed-methods research methodology is used to eliminate the complexities of this topic. This includes both quantitative surveys and qualitative in-depth interviews. The results of the study highlight the central role that several critical factors play in the development of Level 5 SAVs in Germany. Safety and waiting time are key factors, playing an essential role in building user confidence in SAV technology. It is important to consider these factors when promoting SAV technology to potential users. Gender also plays a role, with males showing a higher tendency to use SAV, highlighting gender differences in technology adoption. Further research has also revealed the perceived importance of travel time and cost, although these factors did not significantly affect behavioural intentions towards the use of SAVs. This study contributes significantly to the ongoing debate about the adoption of self-driving vehicles in the wider context of Germany's fast-changing mobility landscape. The findings offer valuable insights for stakeholders, including lawmakers, industry leaders, and policymakers, to navigate the disruptive digital environment. This dissertation addresses critical factors that impact acceptance and provides stakeholders with tools to enable the seamless integration of Level 5 SAVs into Germany's transport ecosystem.

- Designing a multiepitope vaccine against the foodborne pathogenic bacteria Listeria monocytogenes using subtractive immunoinformatics approachesPublication . Aziz, Tariq; Naveed, Muhammad; Shabbir, Muhammad Aqib; Jabeen, Khizra; Khan, Ayaz Ali; Hasnain, Ammarah; Yang, Zhennai; Zinedine, Abdellah; Rocha, João Miguel; Albekairi, Thamer H.Background: Listeria monocytogenes, a Gram-positive bacterium, is a prominent foodborne pathogen that causes listeriosis and poses substantial health hazards worldwide. The continuing risk of listeriosis outbreaks underlies the importance of designing an effective prevention strategy and developing a robust immune response by reverse vaccinology approaches. This study aimed to provide a critical approach for developing a potent multiepitope vaccine against this foodborne disease. Methods: A chimeric peptide construct containing 5 B-cell epitopes, 16 major histocompatibility complex I (MHC-I) epitopes, and 18 MHC-II epitopes were used to create a subunit vaccination against L. monocytogenes. The vaccine safety was evaluated by several online methods, and molecular docking was performed using ClusPro to determine the binding affinity. Immune simulation was performed using the C-ImmSimm server to demonstrate the immune response. Results: The results validated the antigenicity, non-allergenicity, and nontoxicity of the chimeric peptide construct, confirming its suitability as a subunit vaccine. Molecular docking showed a good score of 1276.5 and molecular dynamics simulations confirmed the construct’s efficacy, demonstrating its promise as a good candidate for listeriosis prophylaxis. The population coverage was as high as 91.04% with a good immune response, indicating good antigen presentation with dendritic cells and production of memory cells. Conclusions: The findings of this study highlight the potential of the designed chimeric peptide construct as an effective subunit vaccine against Listeria, paving the way for future advances in preventive methods and vaccine design.
- Dressed for impact : does lifestyle mediate the relation between CSR practices and consumers perception?Publication . Thillmann, Jule; Moreira, SérgioIn the fashion industry, which is known for its environmental impact, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is increasingly important for companies. Societal demands as well as new laws and regulations put companies in debt. Various eventualities to adopt CSR within companies have been investigated in the past however, new, emerging concepts are applied increasingly. Given that there is a vast variety of research on CSR but no direct comparison of specific concepts, this research aims to compare two emerging CSR concepts in the fashion industry. Focus of this work is an environmental concept of upcycling products, made from textile waste as well as a social concept of a donation of a therapy session with the purchase of a product. Purpose of this research is to provide useful insights on consumers perception as well as effects of CSR message on their attitude. Therefore, this work elaborates how the perception of social and environmental CSR communication differs in its9 influence on consumers attitude including the moderating role of lifestyle. For this purpose, literature is analyzed, consumer insights are gained through a survey and expert opinions are gathered through interviews. Independently of which CSR message is used, the findings of this research indicate that CSR leads to a more positive attitude towards a brand. Furthermore, social CSR is slightly better perceived as environmental CSR. By providing a measurable incentive, companies can ensure the generation of a positive attitude towards them. The use of CSR, whether it is environmental or social, can therefore benefit companies.
- Can we coach the mind? : the case study of how to effectively drive athlete performancePublication . Gonçalves, Miguel; Moreira, Sérgio Paulo de JesusBackground and purpose: This paper reviews the case study of a Mental Coaching Program, with the intent of enhancing Mental Coaching professional practices, and provides a teaching note discussing improvements suggested by the literature. Method and results: Using a mix of coaching and training techniques, the 8-month program completed by two athletes, has encountered some setbacks due to athletes’ lack of motivation and commitment. The self-assessment results were positive however not fully supported by the peer assessment. Conclusions: Apart from overall improvements in the assessment method (implementing the TOPS 2), the session (add more mental skills, tools practice in session) and program structure (follow the education, acquisition, and implementation phases for one mental skill, tool or plan at a time), the most significant breakthrough was that there is no idyllic MST program, personalization is required in order to meet and develop the individual's psychological weaknesses.
