- EEG and ECG nonlinear and spectral multiband analysis to explore the effect of videogames against anxietyPublication . Ribeiro, Pedro Rodrigues; Silva, Clédna Patrícia de Oliveira; Rodrigues, Pedro Miguel de LuísCurrently, the use of video games has purposes that go beyond entertainment and has been gaining prominence in the health area. In this sense, it was hypothesized that it is possible to discriminate biological signals, namely electrocardiographic and electroencephalographic signals, collected from different participants stimulated through three different commercial video games, Tetris, Bejeweled and Energy. To test this hypothesis, a protocol was developed with the Trier Social Stress Test to induce and dose stress in the subjects to similar levels before each game session, in order to observe the effects of the three test games (3 study groups) at the physiological level. Initially collected at 2000 Hz, the signals were resampled to 500 Hz and filtered using a Butterworth low-pass filter. After filtering the signals, several representative features of the study signals were collected. These features consisted of a series of nonlinear metrics such as the Lyapunov exponent and Correlation Dimension, self-similarity metrics such as the Hurst exponent, and detrended fluctuation analysis, fractal dimensions - such as the Katz and Higuchi fractal dimensions - and metrics of signal chaos and activity, such as signal energy, Logarithmic entropy and Shannon entropy, and a number of spectral metrics for the EEG signal, which should be able to help identify any differences in the stress response. As a final result, a discrimination accuracy of 100% was obtained to discriminate the three study groups, using the top 20% of features selected by the F-score technique, using the coarse K Nearest Neighbor classifier.
- KOE : a market research business conceptPublication . Leonardo, Ana Rita Albuquerque Francisco Dias; Soares, Fátima Patrícia Nunes da Encarnação Marques Dias; Carneiro, JoãoKoe is a project that aims to modernize the market research industry. It includes two platforms to connect companies and respondents. The companies that subscribe Koe’s services have access to a desktop cloud-based platform where they can build a survey, access the collected data and correlate any data point storage in the cloud. The surveys, made by the companies, show up in a mobile app that made for the respondents. Besides replying to surveys, the respondents are part of a community, where there is a gamification system with rewards and rankings to keep the users engaged. Creating a real sense of community and belonging. This project includes the development of a prototype for Koe, and of a communication campaign to launch it to the market. These are supported by market research, by a simple business plan to assess the idea’s viability, and by a marketing plan. The marketing and the communication strategy is B2C (business to consumer) and is based on the idea of changing the market by telling brands what they want. The plan is to combine print and digital advertising, the print is going to be used for awareness at the launch and at Christmas because it one of the most saturated adverting periods of the year. The digital strategy is based on social media with company pages and ads and three influencers as brand ambassadors. Koe is a relevant project because it gives hope to the called traditional market research industry. It shows that by modernizing and approaching the business in a different way is possible to stay alive and in good health.
- Insights into the antimicrobial resistance profile of a next generation probiotic Akkermansia muciniphila DSM 22959Publication . Machado, Daniela; Barbosa, Joana Cristina; Almeida, Diana; Andrade, José Carlos; Freitas, Ana Cristina; Gomes, Ana MariaAkkermansia muciniphila is a Gram-negative intestinal anaerobic bacterium recently proposed as a novel probiotic candidate to be incorporated in food and pharmaceutical forms. Despite its multiple health benefits, the data addressing its antimicrobial susceptibility profile remain scarce. However, the absence of acquired resistance in probiotic strains is a compulsory criterion for its approval in the qualified presumption of safety list. This study aimed at characterizing the A. muciniphila DSM 22959 strain’s antimicrobial susceptibility profile using phenotypic and in silico approaches. To establish the phenotypic antimicrobial susceptibility profile of this strain, minimum inhibitory concentrations of eight antimicrobials were determined using broth microdilution and E-test methods. Additionally, the A. muciniphila DSM 22959 genome was screened using available databases and bioinformatics tools to identify putative antimicrobial resistance genes (ARG), virulence factors (VF), genomic islands (GI), and mobile genetic elements (MGE). The same categorization was obtained for both phenotypic methods. Resistance phenotype was observed for gentamicin, kanamycin, streptomycin, and ciprofloxacin, which was supported by the genomic context. No evidence was found of horizontal acquisition or potential transferability of the identified ARG and VF. Thus, this study provides new insights regarding the phenotypic and genotypic antimicrobial susceptibility profiles of the probiotic candidate A. muciniphila DSM 22959.
- Different positions in the European Parliament on abortion : the abortion debate in Poland in 2016 and in 2020 as a case studyPublication . Santos, Ana Carolina de Matos Querido Henriques dos; Sadecka, Agnieszka; Castello Branco, José TomazFrom being illegal until 1932, to being legal during the Communist regime, to the compromise of 1993, the abortion law in Poland has been a hotly debated topic that arises ever so often. With the electoral win of PiS in 2015, a new chapter of this debate began, as this party acted to end the 1993’s established abortion legislation. Challenges to the reproductive and women’s rights were not the only facet of this new governing party, with attacks to the rule of law being reported and noticed nationally and internationally. In an atmosphere of turmoil over another right-wing populist party being elected to government, this dissertation centres on two different moments of the abortion debate in Poland: 2016 and 2020, both during PiS’ rule. In 2016 a citizen’s initiative entitled “Stop Abortion” (“Stop Aborcji”) proposed a near-total abortion ban. This event would trigger large-scale grassroots contestation in the streets: especially Black Monday, the largest mobilisation since the Solidarity movement. This struggle eventually succeeded in maintaining the abortion law as it was. In 2020, already with one of the most restrictive abortion laws in Europe, Poland took another step back: the K 1/20 judgement, from the Constitutional Court. This ruling in October of 2020 considered unconstitutional to perform abortions when the foetus is severely malformed or at high risk of impairment – coinciding with the majority of cases of legally performed abortions in Poland. This move was also met with strong contestation on the streets: the Strajk Kobiet protests, with the mobilisation in October of 2020 being one of the largest to memory. The two events mentioned both sparked debates in the European sphere – with the European Parliament becoming the centre stage for activism and international solidarity, with MEPs siding with the protesters or the Polish government. Focusing on the European Parliament (EP) debates “Women’s rights in Poland” (2016) and “Abortion rights in Poland” (2020), but also and many scientific articles, news reports, books, the main goal of this dissertation is to understand the factors behind the different positions on abortion in the EP: either East/West, authoritarian populism/liberal democracy, Poland/Europe, or any other.
