- Interdependency of globalization and innovation as a source for MNEs to thrive : OLI´s case studyPublication . Oliveira, Bernardo Peralta; Yang, XuejingIn the recent decades, it is often discussed how globalization and innovation have become paramount drivers of change in the societal and business context, allowing multinational enterprises to be globally competitive. They presume that technological advantages help MNEs replicate their local success on a global scale. Innovative MNEs are thought to be pursuing a “global strategy”. In a practical business situation, it is not necessarily observed the purported “higher” ability of those innovative MNEs, to emulate their domestic success outside of their home region and to be “global”. To investigate this relation, it was conducted a case study to OLI, a Portuguese multinational company that adopted the internationalization strategy proposed by the Uppsala model, to reduce the company´s operational risks. Also, the company applied the non-location bound asset strategy to overcome the liabilities of foreignness. In fact, OLI has understood the importance of innovation, alongside the importance of creating marketing and branding activities. This dissertation aims to explore the relationship between globalization and innovation and understand how it impacts MNEs´ performance. It was found that throughout international expansion, legal barriers are a major liability of foreignness. Therefore, they should not be neglected.
- Active and healthy aging after COVID-19 pandemic in Portugal and other European countries: time to rethink strategies and foster actionPublication . Costa, Andreia; Camara, Gisele; Arriaga, Miguel Telo de; Nogueira, Paulo; Miguel, José PereiraThe population aging in Europe imposes challenges to societies that require adaptations and responses at various levels to minimize impacts and figuring out opportunities. Portugal has been committed to the World Health Organization and European Union's values and policy frameworks concerning active and healthy aging. In 2017, an inter-ministerial working group developed the National Strategy for Active and Healthy Aging. In the face of the COVID-19 pandemic that exposed the vulnerabilities of older populations, the launch of the Decade of Healthy Aging 2021-2030 and its baseline report and the 2018 Active Aging Index Analytical Report may constitute an opportunity to strategically think about the aging of the population as a national purpose in Portugal and in the other European countries that face similar challenges.
- Strategy case study : strategic portfolio and risk management during COVID-19Publication . Winsor, Jaiden William Thomas; Reis, Ricardo César Ribeiro Ventura FerreiraThis dissertation is a case study on the Canadian fintech referred to as Canada Pay (CP). The case will investigate CP’s strategies during COVID-19 and the adaptive measures to alleviate risks and meet opportunities. The case will deep dive into the gaming and gambling sector. In this industry, CP has adjusted its resources, portfolio, and strategies to adapt to rapid shifts and enhance its competitiveness. It will aim to solve whether or not CP should continue investing in product innovation and penetration in the G&G sector given the shifts caused by COVID-19. The dissertation concludes with the recommendation of continuing investment into product innovation and market penetration for gaming and gambling. This is for 3 key reasons: CP’s resources and dynamic capabilities provide a competitive advantage, the market’s growth opportunities, and CP’s portfolio and risk management that allow for high risk, high reward investments. This case is suitable for academics seeking to perform analyses on the Canadian fintech market, strategic decision-making, or product portfolio and risk management. As the pandemic is still ongoing at the time of this dissertation’s completion, academics will have greater information that may shift the findings and conclusions in the teaching notes. Following the case, theoretical concepts and frameworks are provided for analysis. These should be utilized to address the case from a pedagogical viewpoint. Subsequently, there are teaching notes that are offered as a solution guide. Finally, limitations are provided at the end and may be used to understand where improvements could have been made.
- Core, Clear, and COVID : a case study of Danfoss´ Core & Clear strategy and its implications for the company´s performance during the COVID-19 pandemicPublication . Poulsen, Jacob Nymark; Reis, Ricardo César Ribeiro Ventura FerreiraThe literature on dynamic capabilities is lagging behind on case studies that can assist the strand in achieving theory status. Therefore, this thesis’ contribution is a case study of Danfoss and the impact of its Core & Clear strategy, which the company implemented in the aftermath of the GFC. The research examines, firstly, if Danfoss improved its financial performance in 2020 (the COVID-crisis) compared to 2009 (the GFC) before the Core & Clear strategy was implemented in 2010. I also take the preceding years for each crisis into account, making the entire period of analysis span from 2000 to 2020. Here I find that the Core & Clear strategy is correlated to improvements in all variables that relate to efficiency and profitability, meanwhile, revenue growth was worsened. Secondly, I inspect Core & Clear’s impact on Danfoss’ dynamic capabilities. Based on semi-structured interviews, I conclude that Danfoss improved all propensities of dynamic capabilities based on Barreto’s (2010) definition. Lastly, I triangulated these conclusions with third-party experts, which supported that Danfoss’ Core & Clear strategy would have improved the company’s ability to handle the COVID-crisis. The implication of the research is, firstly, a support of the links from dynamic capabilities to profitability and efficiency. Secondly, I find that dynamic capabilities are important for Danfoss’ industry and environment, contributing to a resolution of these disputes in academia. Lastly, further research would enrich the literature by substantiating these findings through other methods such as longitude, comparable research designs and observational studies.
