- The social-business hybrid organization : the long-desired answer to the BOP dilemma?Publication . Spinnler, Julius; Leglise, LaureThe purpose of this research is to understand how the hybrid character of social business hybrids can contribute to their success on the BOP markets. To answer the research question, I conducted a comparative case study on two companies that can be categorized as social business hybrids and operate in BOP markets. I relied on secondary sources, which mainly consisted of secondary interviews and publicly available third-party sources. To analyze the data collected, I used the framework "value-capturing elements" elaborated by von der Heydte (2020). The results of the study show that both investigated companies can contribute to overcome the challenges of BOP markets due to their hybrid institutional form. Moreover, this research demonstrates that an institutional hybridity is most effective when it harmonizes and aligns with the company's mission. To particularly benefit from hybridity in BOP markets, the following elements prove to be particularly useful: achieving a competitive strategy, implementing value propositions and building a network of strategic partners.
- The impact of technological progress on labor market inequality in the Portuguese ICT sectorPublication . Vogel, Danny Marcel; Matos, Miguel Maria Castro Melo Godinho deThe rapid acceleration of technological progress in recent years not only resulted in innovation and new products but also significantly impacted the labor markets. Existing literature on the US and other Western nations shows that technology leads to a significant increase in labor market inequality. We investigate how technology impacts the inequality in the Portuguese labor market and hereby focus on the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector as it is most susceptible to technological progress. Our analysis is based on two administrative datasets from the Portuguese Statistical Institute (INE) that incorporate all firms and employees in our target market between 2004 and 2017. Our research aims to understand the influence of large corporations that benefit from technology onto the labor market as well as the impact of automation on the return to skill. Consistent with current research, we find a negative influence of market concentration on the labor share. However, unlike the US, the Portuguese ICT sector's labor share increases significantly as large firms decrease in their output share. Further, we observe a decrease in the wage premium for high-skill workers. Hence, the development of indicators represents a significant decrease in the labor market inequality in Portugal's ICT sector. We do not infer causality yet discuss the extensive growth of high-skill employment in the ICT sector as a plausible explanation. We also hypothesize that a shift in the high-skill characteristics or a skill mismatch between university graduates and labor market demand is causal for decreasing inequality.
- How are luxury hotels turning the page from opulence to sustainability? : the case of three portuguese hotelsPublication . Lopes, Inês Almeida de Eça Araújo; Leglise, LaureThis research aims to contribute to the debate about sustainability in the industry of luxury hospitality, by answering the following research question: how are luxury hotels turning the page from opulence to sustainability? To answer this research question, we used a qualitative approach and conducted a comparative case study on three luxury hotels in Portugal which are committed to deliver a sustainable experience without compromising the guest’s expectations. The findings show that it is possible to combine the two concepts and be successful by implementing five strategies: sourcing locally, favouring sustainable construction, having a biological garden, meeting the luxury standards regarding the hotel’s commodities and being located in the countryside without compromising comfort. Although it requires an investment, the study shows it is worth taking.
- The strategies implemented by digital marketplaces to acquire users in foreign countriesPublication . Anjo, Maria João Alegrete Batel; Leglise, LaureWhile researchers conducted many studies about digital platforms, the specific case of digital marketplaces has been insufficiently investigated. In particular, we do not know much about the strategies to acquire users. We intend to fill in the gap by analysing what strategies are effective for digital marketplaces in the acquisition of users when internationalizing. Our results highlight different strategies for digital marketplaces to acquire foreign users. The digital marketplaces must build a relation of trust with the users and choose the most adapted communication channels. The choice of the locations that have the highest potential number of users appears to be also essential. Finally, relying on partnerships with users and complementors has emerged from the results. Moreover, our investigation allowed to found the specificities of a network of users that influence the implemented strategies to acquire users, namely the differences in the users’ profiles from country to country, and the need to acquire firstly supply-side users in order to achieve the equilibrium between demand and supply.
- Is touch really that important? : an analysis of the business opportunity of haptic technology in online shoppingPublication . Agostinho, Henrique Leitão; Saraiva, Gonçalo de Oliveira Vieira DinisCommerce and consumer experience have entered a new reality with the rise of the Internet and the digital age. People are becoming dependent of online shopping due to the convenience of shopping while sitting at home, which saves both time and money. The online environment lacks the sense of touch and this might pose a challenge to online shoppers. The rise of haptic technology could be the answer for lack of touch within online consumer experience. Sensorial technology can give to our digital lives a more realistic experience. This exploratory study aims to analyse the opportunities that haptic technology could generate in online shopping. Therefore, the research problem was examined from two different perspectives. Firstly, from the e-commerce side, in which the purpose was to gain insights about the current state of online business, and the main obstacles that consumers face when shopping online. Secondly, from haptic experts’ side, understand what the current status of haptic technology development is and if the haptic technology can improve online business. Findings reveal that haptic technology is going to play an important role in the gaming industry, medical training, education, and other industries within the next years, but for e-commerce purposes, not in the short time. Findings also report that there are a few other challenges in online shopping and touch is not consider as a priority. The development and implementation of this technology are also considered a brick-wall to implement in a short time.
- Apadrinhamento civil : uma nova oportunidade de proteger : um recomeçoPublication . Silva, Verónica Alexandra Pereira da; Baptista, Isabel Maria de CarvalhoEste trabalho refere-se ao relatório final de uma investigação intitulada: “Apadrinhamento Civil – uma nova oportunidade de proteger – Um recomeço”, e conducente à obtenção do Grau de Mestre em Ciências da Educação pela Universidade Católica do Porto. Considerando os imperativos de proteção e promoção das crianças e jovens, num quadro de reconhecimento do estatuto de cidadania da infância, pretendeu-se saber em que medida o instituto jurídico do apadrinhamento civil contribui para a realização do direito da criança à família e a um novo projeto de vida. Para tal, quisemos averiguar sobre a perceção dos atores que trabalham na concretização desta medida de modo a compreender de que forma aquela figura jurídica atua no sistema de proteção, tendo por base a literatura científica sobre a infância e as referências teóricos da Pedagogia Social. Os dados recolhidos e analisados permitiram concluir sobre a pertinência da medida de apadrinhamento civil e a necessidade de aposta na formação técnico-pedagógica dos atores, institucionais e profissionais, que acompanham atuam na sua concretização.
- A cumulação de pedidos no contencioso tributário : a problemática do requisito da identidade da natureza dos tributosPublication . Cunha, Nádia Neto da; Morais, Rui Manuel Corucho DuarteApós a entrada em vigor do Código do Procedimento e Processo Tributário, o artigo 104º gerou controvérsia pela exigência da “identidade da natureza dos tributos” para que se possa cumular pedidos de anulação de liquidações. Tal requisito foi uma novidade do processo tributário, e a forma como foi interpretado pela jurisprudência, até 2012, tornou a cumulação de pedidos muito rígida em comparação com o processo civil e com o processo administrativo, e mesmo, no âmbito tributário, com a arbitragem tributária. Assim sendo, a presente dissertação aborda as várias posições, doutrinais e jurisprudenciais, em torno deste polémico requisito, tentando esclarecer a motivação do legislador na sua criação, culminando na alteração legislativa à norma introduzida pela Lei n.º 118/2019 de 17 de setembro. Concluímos que, apesar desta última tentativa de tornar a norma menos rígida, com a supressão do requisito da “identidade da natureza dos tributos, a verdade é que em confrontação com o processo administrativo, onde se consagra o princípio da livre cumulação, consideramos que a rigidez permanece. Defendemos, por isso, a necessidade de criar de um regime novo, autónomo e mais elástico em processo tributário, de modo a concretizar o princípio da economia processual que está na base deste instituto.
- Self-service technologies potential in the portuguese retail sectorPublication . Albuquerque, Marco Guilherme Oliveira; Saraiva, Gonçalo de Oliveira Vieira DinisThe use of self-service technologies has the potential to disrupt the Portuguese retail industry. The aim of this research is to assess how can SSTs transform the retail space in Portugal. This assessment was done by studying the relationship between consumer problems with attributes of self-service technologies and by the relationship between Technology readiness of consumers and self-service technologies adoption and lastly by the relationship between selfservice technologies satisfaction and the consumers’ trustworthiness and willingness to purchase. The data supported that self-service technologies could solve specific consumers problems related with their retail experience. Furthermore, the hypothesized framework indicated that the higher the technology readiness of a consumer the higher the self-service technology adoption will be. Besides, the Technology readiness of consumers is a crucial variable to evaluate the willingness to use innovative self-service stores. Lastly, results also show that the higher self-service technologies satisfaction, the higher will be the consumers’ trustworthiness and loyalty with the respective retailers and the higher will be the willingness to purchase. Besides, more results are shown in order to support the conclusions. This research finishes with limitations and recommendations for future studies about this topic.
- The impact of virtual reality technology in portuguese real estatePublication . It aims to study how virtual reality can be impactful to the consumer’s buying process, brand relationship, and its effectiveness to the businesses that employ the technology. Virtual reality is a technology that creates an artificial environment generated with a computer with the goal of simulating a real environment and present it to the user as such. It can be of the immersive or non-immersive type, depending on the additional hardware required, although the real estate companies that use it nowadays opt for the non-immersive type. The use of this technology has become increasingly popular, being common in industries like the gaming industry, and real estate to a lesser extent. This research gathered data that evidences that consumers are generally positive towards virtual reality, and show a high level of acceptation to including virtual reality in the process of searching for a house to buy, indicating that the technology is ready to become widespread and relevant. Furthermore, the study helps understand that from the business perspective, virtual reality in its current state lacks cost effectiveness to be worthy of widespread implementation in real estate businesses. Nonetheless, the data suggest that the subject matter of this research holds relevance for the consumer and may become important in the near future.
- Cultura escolar e pedagogia social : formação pessoal e social do professor de educação físicaPublication . O estudo em causa aborda a relação entre cultura escolar e pedagogia social, tendo como referência concreta a formação pessoal e social do Professor de Educação Física (FPS). Do ponto de vista teórico, o estudo enquadra−se na Pedagogia Social, reconhecida como ciência da educação referente aos processos de educação e formação ao longo da vida, desenvolvidos numa perspetiva de solidariedade social. Para tal, recorreu−se a autores de destaque, no plano nacional e internacional, bem como às orientações produzidas pelas entidades oficiais do setor. Do ponto de vista empírico, optou−se por um estudo de caso enquadrado pelo paradigma interpretativo. Os dados recolhidos e analisados permitiram concluir sobre a relevância da formação pessoal e social dos Professores de Educação Física, reforçando assim a convicção de partida e sugerindo a necessidade de aposta em programas de formação docente que valorizem a articulação entre a educação escolar e a pedagogia social.
