- GDP-linked bonds : design, effects, pricing and way forwardPublication . Pereira, David Miguel Taylor de Jesus Marques; Bonfim, Diana Carina Ribeiro GuimarãesGDP-linked bonds could play an important role in helping countries to avoid solvency crises, defaults and sovereign debt restructurings. Indexing a country’s debt payments to its economic performance could give governments some type of insurance against periods of declining growth rates. In this context, this thesis illustrates the potential advantages of the issuance of such an instrument, namely by quantifying the above mentioned insurance effect. As such, the interest savings for a group of countries most affected by the European sovereign debt crisis should they have issued GDP-linked bonds in the beginning of the decade are calculated. It is concluded that theses savings would have been considerable. Furthermore, in order to understand the additional room for countercyclical fiscal measures created by this product, the correlation between primary balance and GDP growth is simulated for both scenarios: debt with indexation to GDP growth and without it. It is then concluded that correlation between those two variables would be significantly higher with indexation. In the same vein, it is also simulated the issuance of this instrument in currency unions, in particular in the euro area, applying the corresponding fiscal constraint to the total deficit of 3% of GDP. Thus, the correlation between primary balance and GDP growth shows that indexing debt to GDP growth has the potential to offset the curbing effect of the mentioned constraint. Moreover, through simple regressions and using the Capital Asset Pricing Model, it is concluded that the portion of undiversified risk associated to the indexation to GDP growth would be low.
- What is the role of Human Resource Management in growing start-ups?Publication .
- Persistir no documentário : enfrentando e abraçando o imprevisto, procurando novas viasPublication .
- Relationship between personality and work engagement : the role of individual traits and international experiencePublication . Gulamali, Danisha Ismail; Oliveira, Maria Teresa Vieira deTo strive in today’s challenging, fast-paced and constantly changing environment, organizations need to put employees at the core of their business, as people are a fundamental asset and can either boost or damage a company. It is in this line of thought that the concept of Work Engagement has been developing and gaining more attention, since engaged employees exhibit an effective and energetic connection with their work which makes them more resilient, involved and absorbed in their tasks. This empirical study aims at understanding how the individual’s dispositional traits, conceptualized in the Big Five model – Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Neuroticism and Openness to Experience - impact Work Engagement, in particular within the Portuguese context. Moreover, it also frames the concept of International Experience as a moderator variable between the positive relationship of Openness to Experience and Work Engagement. Firstly, the results indicate that some of the individual traits of the Big Five model have impact on Work Engagement, namely, Extraversion, Conscientiousness and Openness to Experience have a positive relation while Neuroticism has a negative relation. Secondly, it proves the positive impact of International Experience on Openness to Experience but it does not validate the extension of that relationship with Work Engagement.
- Can design thinking add value to new product development? : a quantitative investigation of efficacyPublication . Schubert, Verena Nicole; Costa, Cláudia Isabel de SousaGaining tremendous popularity over the past decade, the concept Design Thinking is seen as an exciting, universal applicable paradigm to solve ill-defined problems and increase organizational innovativeness. To examine whether this statement is accurate, this study observes the effectiveness of Design Thinking findings critically by (1) presenting the origin, concept and application of Design Thinking and (2) assessing the effectiveness of a one-day Design Thinking workshop by a statistically comparing Design Thinking workshop outcome and actual market data. Addressing two separated customer segments, namely students and young professionals, the considerable variance between both segments and medium accuracy levels of 45-65% show that Design Thinking should not be interpreted as an unconditional guarantee for fruitful innovations. Hence, this thesis argues that Design Thinking, executed through a one-day workshop, inheres risk of oversimplification and should be applied with caution.

- Geo-fencing and geo-conquesting in comparison : gender differences and the impact of expiry, groups and framingPublication . Freisl, Philipp Marco; Costa, Cláudia Isabel de SousaWhile the importance of digital marketing grows constantly, mobile establishes itself as a foundational marketing channel. Increasing ownership and engagement with mobile devices creates exceptional opportunities for location-based advertising (LBA), but its effectiveness and important conditions to add additional value are still underexplored. The aim of this study is to measure two mobile marketing tools, Geo-Fencing and Geo-Conquesting, and test redemption rates and consumption levels. Results are analysed according to four different conditions (gender, expiry, groups and framing). We conducted two field experiments in different locations with 320 participants and used coffee as the product stimulus. Overall, 24.7% of the coupons were redeemed (37.5% in Geo- Fencing and 11.9% in Geo-Conquesting) with no significant difference of the strategies in terms of consumption levels. Interestingly, coupons with longer expiration length are more effective than with shorter expiration length in Geo-Conquesting. Also, when the consumers receive the promotion in a group in Geo-Fencing, they are more likely to redeem. Framing effects and gender did not respond differently to the strategies. Our results contribute to a better understanding of LBA strategies and provide a critical baseline for marketers. Our findings suggest that Geo-Fencing is more effective than Geo- Conquesting in terms of redemption, in which firms should target groups of both genders. To generate additional sales through Geo-Conquesting, firms should offer their promotions with a longer expiration length.
