- O uso abusivo do direito à grevePublication .
- How can companies capture value from an innovation? : from value creation to value capture : case study UberPublication . Seifert, Frederik; Vasconcelos, Flavio Carvalho deThis thesis examines the value creation process and how companies can capture value that they created. It particularly analyses the opportunities a company has to capture value from an innovation. The ability to monetise innovations is crucial for companies and determines whether they can establish a sustainable business. This thesis first discusses previous research and connects theories to broaden and enhance their applicability. The main part is a case study on Uber, a ride-hailing company. In the case study, the company is thoroughly examined and theories which were discussed before are applied in order to expose how Uber creates and captures value. This thesis further highlights the importance of network effects in a competitive environment within the sharing economy. Although value creation and value capturing has extensively been discussed in prior research, this thesis contributes by applying traditional and recent theories to a rising startup that has received unprecedented funding from its investors. Understanding how Uber pursues its way to the top and how it captures value provides vital implications for other similar startups and helps them in their efforts to succeed. This thesis finds that Uber needs to focus on three aspects. Firstly, it needs to diversify its portfolio and offer more services. Secondly, it needs to develop a system that prevents drivers from using competing apps, which would realise network effects that lower prices and enable faster pickups. Thirdly, it needs to further innovate, especially in the field of autonomous driving.
- Entre-modos. - The impact of environmental cues on customers' quality perception and willingness to pay and the moderating role of consumer mood and motivesPublication . Marcomini, Silvia; Andrade, Eduardo BittencourtThe literature shows that shopping environment has an impact on various consumer behaviors, and that an elegant environment is associated with higher customer’ quality perception and willingness to pay. I investigated and found that this is true only when consumers are in a positive mood. When they are in a negative mood, consumers infer higher quality from a discount-looking shop. A between-design experimental survey has been conducted to analyze the impact of shopping environment, mood and shopping motivation on customers’ perception of quality and willingness to pay. Two mood conditions (positive/negative) have been created and induced to respondents at the beginning of the survey, along with two shopping environment conditions (upscale-looking/discount-looking) based on design, scent and sales personnel factors. Results show that shopping environment does not impact significantly the dependent variables but it interacts significantly with mood to determine quality perception; shopping motivation impacts significantly both quality perception and willingness to pay.

- Exploring the whole value of corporate volunteeringPublication . Mayer, Jorge Manuel Lima Pinto; Silva, Susana Cristina Lima da Costa eThere is a worldwide need to measure and assess the social impact of volunteering. The designated corporate volunteering, or employer supported volunteering programmes, in particular, are developed by more and more companies, investing millions of dollars and with little knowledge of their value. This master's thesis explored the value generated by a corporate volunteering programme. The analysis was based on a new valuation model - the ‘Whole Value Model’ - that results from the adaptation of the model advocated by Andrew Haldane in 2014. The analysis followed the single case study method focusing on the corporate volunteering programme of the EDP Group, which is present in 14 countries. The results obtained were compared with the few existing adequate reference values and are in context with them. This analysis showed that the EDP programme was estimated to generate an average of at least 3,55 € for every 1 € invested, if assumed that the whole generated value is a sum of several different values. The potential return on volunteer hour granted by EDP was 5,75 higher than its costs. In this case study the whole generated value was estimated to be 22 times larger than just the economic value, showing that economic value is a very small tip of the iceberg of the whole value that corporate volunteering generates. The results were considered a conservative estimate of the whole value generated. The study enabled the application of the new model for value analysis of corporate volunteering, providing a basis for its application to other companies.
- Creating value with digital platforms : the cases of Uber and AirbnbPublication . Pugliese, Carlotta Maria Barracosa; Linhares, AlexandreThis thesis is intended to analyze a new business model, which bases the main activities of a company in a digital platform. To do so, two companies – Uber and Airbnb - were studied in depth. An overview of each company, an analysis of how is their pricing model and some financial data is shown. In order to provide conclusions concerning the main question of this study, how is value created through digital platforms, it is important to deliver some information regarding the major theoretical concepts, such as sharing economy, trust or network effects. The most fundamental for this work was, certainly, the sharing economy one: the fact that this type of economy is emerging and allowing people to connect with each other and generate activity is very important. Later in the thesis, a model is used to give a more clear perspective of which elements generate value, when a platform is in use. The platform allows transactions, which therefore enable the participating organizations to create value.
