- Beyond work: the role of “family-friendly” practices in the subjective well-being of teleworkers and on-site workers in the COVID-19 pandemicPublication . Lopes, Sílvia; Couto, Rita; Rodrigues, Anabela; Sabino, Ana; Oliveira, Íris M.; Dias, Paulo C.; Leite, Ângela; Carvalho, Vânia SofiaDuring the COVID-19 pandemic, telework emerged as a pivotal strategy to mitigate the spread of the virus. However, telework’s feasibility was contingent on job roles. This gave rise to two distinct groups: teleworkers and on-site workers. However, the impacts of social support and well-being extended to both groups. This study investigated the link between organisational and supervisory family support and subjective well-being, examining work engagement as a mediator. Conducted in Portugal, this cross-sectional study surveyed 515 individuals via web-based questionnaires. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, and multiple-group analysis. The findings revealed a positive correlation between perceived organisational family support (POFS) and work engagement for both groups. Additionally, perceived supervisory family support (PSFS) positively correlated with work engagement for telecommuters but not on-site workers. Furthermore, work engagement was positively associated with subjective well-being for both groups. Moreover, work engagement mediated the relationship between POFS and subjective well-being. This study enriches the literature by analysing POFS, PSFS, work engagement, and subjective well-being dynamics among teleworkers and on-site employees.
- Burnout: personal and work factors in volunteer and career firefightersPublication . Dias, Paulo C.; Oliveira, Íris M.; Rodrigues, Anabela; Peixoto, RicardoPurpose: Firefighters are daily confronted with adverse, unpredictable and demanding situations. It is a dangerous profession that puts firefighters at risk of developing burnout. Although the literature has already identified personal and work-related factors of burnout, the examination of specific factors explaining burnout among volunteer and career firefighters is still needed. The purpose of this study is to investigate the explaining role of personal and work-related factors on volunteer and career firefighters' burnout. Design/methodology/approach: A nonrandom convenience sample of 250 firefighters (67% volunteer; M-age = 31.88) completed a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Oldenburg Burnout Inventory, the Proactive Coping Scale and a standard of living subscale item. Hierarchical multiple linear regression models were tested. Fisher's criterion was considered, with p-values lower than 0.05 interpreted as statistically significant. Findings Personal and work-related factors accounted for 18% of volunteer and 31% of career firefighters' variations in burnout. Personal factors offered a greater contribution explaining volunteer and career firefighters' burnout. Still, variations in the role played by age, family responsibilities, proactive coping and satisfaction with standard of living on burnout were found among volunteer and career firefighters. Taking the work-related factors into account, working in rotative shifts constituted a risk factor for career firefighters' burnout. Research limitations/implications This study advances the understanding about the role of personal and work-related factors in volunteer and career firefighters' burnout. Originality/value: This study adds information about specific factors explaining burnout among voluntary and career firefighters. It deepens existing knowledge on variations in the role played by age, family responsibilities, work conditions, proactive coping and satisfaction with standard of living on the burnout of volunteer and career firefighters.
- Career adapt-abilities scale: psychometric properties in a Lebanese samplePublication . Marques, Cátia; Oliveira, Íris M.; Vautero, Jaisso; Silva, Ana DanielaThis study examined the psychometric properties of the Career Adapt-Abilities Scale in a Lebanese sample. The study includes 236 Lebanese citizens (54.2% women; Mage = 30.14). Confirmatory factor analyses indicated that a hierarchical model yielded a good fit, with the CAAS measuring four distinct dimensions that can be combined in a higher-order career adaptability factor in a Lebanese sample. Results showed that the overall CAAS and sub-dimensions were highly reliable. Pearson correlation coefficients demonstrated that the CAAS’ scores were related to those of basic values and life satisfaction. The CAAS constitutes a promising measure to be used in Lebanese career counselling.
- Children's career expectations and parents' jobs: intergenerational (dis)continuitiesPublication . Oliveira, Íris M.; Porfeli, Erik J.; Taveira, Maria do Céu; Lee, BoraChildren develop career expectations as they increase self-knowledge and perceive societal affordances and barriers to life roles. Parents are powerful agents in the socialization of children to work, transmitting occupational concepts that influence children's career development. The authors used Gottfredson's (1981) and Holland's (1973) theories to test associations between children's career expectations and parents' jobs in terms of gender, prestige, and interest typology among same-sex and cross-sex child-parent dyads. Data were collected from 185 Portuguese children (51.4% boys, 48.6% girls; Mage = 10.41 years) from 2-parent families. Children reported their parents' jobs and shared personal career expectations. Correlation and linear regression results indicated that fathers' male-dominated jobs put boys at risk of gender-based circumscription of career expectations. An intergenerational cycle of prestige inequalities was also evidenced, although parents seemed to support children's exploration of various interest areas. Future research could explore these relationships across family structures. Practice should foster children's in-breadth career exploration and engage parents as key partners.
- Competência emocional como recurso para o envolvimento de adolescentes na escolaPublication . Sampaio, Joana; Oliveira, Íris M.; Araújo, Alexandra M.Emotional competence, an indicator of positive development in adolescence, is an explicative factor of academic success. However, research addressing relations among emotional competence and procedural variables of academic success, such as engagement in school, is still needed. This study examines whether emotional competence constitutes a personal resource for adolescents’ engagement in school, having controlled the effects for gender and school level. The Emotional Skills and Competence Questionnaire and the Four-Dimensional Scale of Students’ Engagement in School were completed by 303 adolescents of both genders (Mage = 16.36) attending high school. Results from a hierarchical multiple linear regression model suggested that emotional competence explains 34% of the variance of engagement in school. Implications for research and psychological intervention are discussed.
- Conceptions of career choice and attainment in Portuguese preschool and elementary-school childrenPublication . Oliveira, Íris M.; Howard, Kimberly A. S.; Marques, Cátia; Silva, Ana Daniela; Taveira, Maria do CéuThe Conceptions of Career Choice and Attainment (CCCA) model has been supporting research on children’s career reasoning, particularly in the USA. This study examines the applicability of the CCCA model to Portuguese preschool and elementary-school children. The CCCA interview was answered by 101 children (38.6% preschoolers, 61.4% elementary schoolers; Mage = 6.68). Results indicated that elementary schoolers present signifcantly higher levels of career choice and attainment reasoning than preschoolers. Future studies with middle schoolers are needed to keep investigating the model in Portugal. Studies in other countries would also be useful to encourage collaboration in childhood career development research and practice.
- Conflict management strategies as moderators of burnout in the context of emotional laborPublication . Rodrigues, Anabela; Francisco, Micaela; Oliveira, Íris M.; Leite, Ângela; Lopes, SílviaThis study explores the relationship between emotional labor and burnout, focusing on the moderating role of conflict management strategies. A total of 233 employees from diverse sectors in Portugal participated in this cross-sectional investigation. We employed the Emotional Labor Scale (ELS) and the Oldenburg Burnout Inventory (OLBI) to quantitatively assess emotional labor and burnout levels. Additionally, the study examined conflict management practices in the workplace using the Conflict Management Strategies Assessment Scale (ROCI-2). The findings reveal that participants reported high emotional labor and burnout levels and a positive correlation between these constructs. As expected, conflict management strategies were found to moderate this relationship. Additionally, participants reported employing collaborative approaches as the most frequent conflict management strategy. These results underscore the urgent need for organizations to implement targeted conflict management training programs and psychological and emotional support initiatives to alleviate the adverse effects of emotional labor on burnout. By fostering healthier workplace environments, organizations can enhance employee well-being and productivity.
- A educação social na contemporaneidade: desafios e oportunidades para a primeira infânciaPublication . Camões, Ana Cláudia Rodrigues; Mateus, Cristina Cruz; Oliveira, Íris M.; Noronha, DulceThis work advocates the thesis that the training of neuroeducators constitutes a response from social professionals, such as social educators, to early childhood. The contemporaneous challenges increasingly require career adaptability, which may put career commitment and professional ethics into question. The social professional profile is presented as a unifier of diverse initial training courses, all needed to respond to early childhood. A highly-specialized training of neuroeducators is proposed to foster care, education and intervention in early childhood, thus acknowledging the scientific knowledge from Neurosciences and off ering an opportunity to the current society.
