- Applicability of the scientific method of the phenomenology of the practice of oncologic nursingPublication . Bacalhau, Lúcia; Pontífice-Sousa, Patrícia; Marques, RitaBACKGROUND: The phenomenology deals with the practice of a qualitative scientific method, endorsed by van Manen who aims to analyse the phenomenon associated with what is experiencedby the person. The hermeneutic phenomenology of van Manen has been particularly influent in theinvestigation of the experience lived associated in situations of health/disease. This method articulatesthe phenomenology, hermeneutics, semiotics, using a process of research which incorporates aconsideration of what is experienced, that values and improves the understanding of the humanexperience[1]. It is a scientific and rigorous method to analyse phenomenological data collected fromvarious sources[2]. The bibliometry concept is co-substantiated in the use of the statistical andmathematical methods, that is, quantitative methods, from the original items available in thedatabases[3,4]. OBJECTIVE: This research aims to identify in the scientific literature, the applicability ofthe scientific method of phenomenology in oncologic nursing practice through a bibliometric research.METHODS: As a method a bibliometric review was used, using bibliometric indicators, setting up aquantitative and objective consideration. RESULTS: We gathered 19 items to analyse, being that, 73%of the items have as a target population the oncologic patient. In this population the predominanttopic is the experiencing of the disease and the specific treatment procedures. The rest of the itemsare directed at the parents of the oncologic patient and the care giving nurses in this field. The reviewsare published in magazines with an average impact factor of 1,337 and with a maximum of 54registered citations. Based on the observation of the bibliometric map we are able to confirm theassociation of the terms experience, study and cancer, besides this, these stand out more, whichmeans that these are the terms which had a greater number of citations. The words patient andmeaning are emphasised in a strong correlation. CONCLUSIONS: The application of the scientificmethod of phenomenology of the oncologic nursing practice is important for the understanding of themeaning of the life experience in the process of the oncologic disease, because it allows for theunderstanding of the needs, emotions, the care which has consequences in the provision of care.
- Comfort-promoting interventions for the elderly in hospital settingsPublication . Marques, Rita; Dixe, Maria dos Anjos; Sousa, Patrícia PontíficeBackground: The comfort of the elderly in hospital settings requires special attention from the health care professionals involved, particularly nurses, since hospitalization often generates suffering and discomfort. In such contexts, it is essential to consider the specific characteristics of the elderly, taking into account their life experiences and their needs, to promote the health, well-being, and comfort of this population. Hence, the present work aimed to explore the nursing interventions that promote comfort among the elderly in hospital settings. Methods: A mixed descriptive exploratory study was conducted through the application of a questionnaire, using intentional non-probabilistic sampling. The study encompassed 55 elderly individuals hospitalized in the medical service of a public hospital located in Lisbon. Results: The results show that the participants perceived a reasonable level of comfort (5.65 ± 6.46). The following categories emerged from the content analysis: (1) physical interventions; (2) psycho-spiritual interventions; (3) socio-cultural interventions; and (4) environmental interventions. Conclusions: These findings help to understand comfort-promoting nursing interventions in the studied population. It was concluded that, to improve care quality, comforting interventions should focus on the elderly patient’s individuality, through support activities, empowerment, and the preservation/correction of the surrounding environment. Additionally, the provided care should be based on the real needs, expectations, preferences, and values of the elderly individual.

- Exploring bioactivities and peptide content of body mucus from the lusitanian toadfish Halobatrachus didactylusPublication . Cunha, Marta Fernandez; Coscueta, Ezequiel R.; Brassesco, María Emilia; Marques, Rita; Neto, José; Almada, Frederico; Gonçalves, David; Pintado, ManuelaIdentifying bioactive molecules from marine organisms is still vastly understudied. Fish remain an untapped source of bioactive molecules, even when considering species whose toxicity to other fish species has been noticed before. We assessed potential applications of crude body mucus of the Lusitanian toadfish (Halobratachus didactylus) and characterized its peptide fraction composition. Mucus samples from three individuals (two wild and one captive) revealed potential antioxidant, antihypertensive, and antimicrobial activities. For antioxidant activity, the best results of 2371 ± 97 µmol Trolox Equivalent/g protein for ORAC and 154 ± 6 µmol Trolox Equivalent/g protein for ABTS were obtained. For antihypertensive activity, the relevant inhibitory activity of ACE resulted in IC50 of 60 ± 7 µg protein/mL. Antimicrobial activity was also identified against the pathogenic bacteria Escherichia coli and Listeria monocytogenes. The peptide profile of the crude body mucus was obtained through size exclusion chromatography, with a conspicuous peak at ca. 800 Da. LC-MS/MS allowed the detection of the most probable peptide sequences of this dominant peptide. This is the first study where the bioactive potential of mucus from the Lusitanian toadfish is demonstrated. Peptides with such properties can be applied in the food and pharmaceutical industries.

- ISBAR: a handover nursing strategy in emergency departments, scoping reviewPublication . Chaica, Veronica; Marques, Rita; Pontífice-Sousa, PatríciaThe present work aims to map the available scientific evidence on the benefits of using the ISBAR tool in the nursing care of acutely ill adult patients’ handover in an emergency department context. To this end, a scoping review was conducted, according to the guidelines proposed by the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI), to answer the following research question: “What are the benefits of using the ISBAR tool in the nursing care of acutely ill adult patients’ handover in an emergency department context?” The bibliographic search was carried out during August and September 2023 in the following electronic databases: CINAHL Complete; MEDLINE Complete; Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials; Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews; and Cochrane Methodology Register. Only works published between 2013 and 2023 were deemed fit for inclusion. All the included studies (9) show that ISBAR methodology, as a standardized tool for transferring nursing care in the emergency service, allows for a safe, clear, and concise transition of nursing care. The benefits relate to patient and professional safety, continuity, and quality of care, as well as patient and professional comfort, with health gains.
