- RECRIAR : portugueses do Luxemburgo : a curatorial and theoretical reflection on the portuguese immigration in LuxembourgPublication . Abrahimia, Atena; Cachola, Ana Cristina PiresPortugal has long been a country of emigration with many of its citizens choosing to leave especially since the 1960s. The Portuguese have emigrated for various reasons such as: to avoid military service during what is called the colonial war in Portugal and the war of independence in Angola, Portuguese Guinea and Mozambique (Schiltz, 2013: 78), to find a better quality of life abroad, to escape the authoritarian regime during the 20th century (Correia, 2013: 63) and the economic crisis of the past decade (Schiltz, 2013: 13). Many of the ones who left Portugal chose to move to Luxembourg where they today make up 16% of the total Luxembourgish population (Klein and Peltier, 2018). Against this backdrop, this project wishes to reflect about the different generations of Portuguese immigrants in Luxembourg through a curatorial and theoretical approach. Based on a first stage of bibliographic and artistic research, the exhibition, RECRIAR: Portugueses do Luxemburgo, was curated. The exhibition took place in Fábrica Braço de Prata (Lisbon, PT) between the 7th and 30th of June 2018. The works of four photographers from Luxembourg were presented: Sven Becker, Paulo Lobo, Bruno Oliveira and Jessica Theis. Each of them explored a different aspect of the lives of the Portuguese in Luxembourg. The thesis and the exhibition examine through photography, the challenges of identity and belonging as well as the challenges and results of immigration which have shaped the Portuguese in Luxembourg and Luxembourg as a country.
