Abstract(s)
The main aim of the present study is to deepen the singularities underlying the process of maternal mourning, in the context of unexpected loss, privileging the individual dimension of the mothers who went through this experience Considering the aforementioned objective, which refers to the deepening of meanings and experiences of the subjects, the present work was based on a qualitative methodology. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with three mothers who unexpectedly lost a child. The procedures for qualitative analysis were performed in accordance with the principles of the Grounded Theory. Through the participants speeches, the process of maternal grief, due to unexpected loss can be characterized, in a significant way, by negative emotional responses, which extend over time, and may exceed the period of time considered as adaptive in the elaboration of a mourning process. The main coping strategies used by the participants seem to be oriented towards maintaining the bond, for emotional expression and for action. These experiences seem to be better understood in the light of the Dual Model of Stroebe e Schut (1999). We believe that the knowledge of these singularities brings contributions to a deeper understanding of the maternal grief process in these particular circumstances, with implications for the adjustment of professional practices in this phenomenon.
