As apostas desportivas demonstraram ser uma das modalidades de jogo mais praticada por adolescentes, verificando-se cada vez mais uma maior incidência e subsequente risco para o desenvolvimento de Perturbação de Jogo Patológico. O presente estudo teve como objetivo geral caracterizar o envolvimento nas apostas desportivas em adolescentes portugueses e analisar o papel de diferentes variáveis individuais (género, crenças erróneas e impulsividade) e contextuais (família e grupo de pares) neste comportamento. A amostra integrou adolescentes do décimo ano de escolaridade (N = 224), de onze escolas na área metropolitana do Porto (Maia, Gondomar e Porto). Os resultados apontam para um maior envolvimento dos participantes do género masculino em apostas desportivas. O envolvimento em apostas desportivas da família e dos pares também tem implicações no comportamento em apostas desportivas nos adolescentes. Foi encontrado que quando os participantes se envolvem em apostas desportivas, tendem a envolverem-se também em outras modalidades de jogo a dinheiro e, que, quando os participantes se encontram envolvidos em apostas desportivas apresentam maiores níveis de crenças erróneas, ao contrário de impulsividade. Estes resultados salientam a necessidade de investimento em futuras investigações, e de integrar programas de promoção de literacia, junto das famílias, e programas de prevenção junto dos adolescentes.
Sports betting has proved to be one of the most practiced ways of gambling by adolescents, with an increasing incidence and subsequent risk for the development of Pathological Gambling Disorder. The broad objective was to characterize the involvement in sports betting in Portuguese adolescents and to analyze the role of different individual variables (gender, erroneous beliefs and impulsivity) and contextual variables (family and peer group). The sample included adolescents from the tenth year of schooling (n = 224), from eleven schools in the metropolitan area of Porto (Maia, Gondomar and Porto). The results point to a greater involvement of male participants in sports betting. The results indicate a greater involvement of male participants in sports betting. Family and peer involvement in sports betting also has implications for sports betting behavior in adolescents. It was found that when participants are involved in sports betting, they tend to also be involved in other types of gambling and, that when participants are involved in sports betting they have higher levels of erroneous beliefs, as opposed to impulsiveness. These results highlight the need to invest in future research, and to integrate literacy promotion programs, with families, and prevention programs with adolescents.
