Abstract(s)
This document is part of the curricular unit, report, which is included in the syllabus of the 10th Master's Course in Nursing with Specialization in Medical-Surgical Nursing, for the academic year 2016/2018, promoted by the Nursing School – Porto. It aims to describe, in a critically-reflexive way, the certification of competences throughout the medical-surgical nursing course, that took place in the intensive care unit and the intermediate care unit for cardiac disorders. The achievement of skills and decision-making before complex and unpredictable situations, during the stage, was a constant. In addition, the difficulties and confrontations with which a specialist nurse is faced, had been approached from an ethical, moral, social and deontological perspective, based on the assumptions that guide the nursing profession, specifically, in addressing the critical patient. Throughout the document, a critical-reflexive analysis is carried out of the most relevant activities and improvement opportunities, which are at the center of the desired specialist nurse competencies, also replying to the purposes previously outlined. Care’s safety is one of the paths for the continuous improvement of health quality, so this dialectic, was the cross-cutting theme throughout the document. In order to this, under an advanced Nursing perspective, some themes were developed: critical patient’s safety during primary and secondary transportation, and quality care improvement, who must include the patient/family binomial, deepened problems such as relative’s presence in the cardiopulmonary resuscitation maneuvers, inside the hospital. All of these subjects have provided an active role in promoting future practices that boost efficiency, safety and, consequently, improve the quality of care. These behaviors contributed for reaching greater autonomy, according to an advanced care perspective and to a greater social visibility, crucial for nursing’s increase.
