Introdução: A estética e durabilidade das restaurações dependem do acabamento e polimento, em que a rugosidade da superfície é um parâmetro a ter em consideração. Esta depende dos instrumentos de desgaste, propriedades da resina e factores inerentes ao operador. Superfícies irregulares são mais susceptíveis a acumulação de placa, inflamação gengival, doença periodontal, infiltração marginal da restauração e cáries. Objetivos: Avaliar e investigar o efeito de diferentes instrumentos rotatórios de acabamento e polimento em restaurações de resina composta usados na Clínica Universitária da UCP e examinar essas superfícies por comparação de rugosidade. Material e métodos:32 dentes humanos extraídos foram preparados com uma cavidade convencionada em superfície hígida. Foram divididos em grupos e restaurados com os compósitos HRi® (Micerium) e com Synergy®D6 (Coltène) e submetidos a diferentes métodos de acabamento e polimento. A avaliação da rugosidade superficial foi avaliada com perfilometria óptica e estudada com o software SensoScan 5.3 (SensoTech, S.L.). Para a análise estatística dos dados usou-se o sofware SPSS Statistics, versão 23da IBM. Resultados: Para o acabamento, a rugosidade superficial inferior verificou-se nas superfícies sujeitas a desgaste com broca laminada, em todos os parâmetros. Não se verificaram diferenças estatísticas entre as resinas compostas e observou-se que ambos os compósitos polimerizados contra uma fita matriz de poliéster apresentaram uma superfície com valores de rugosidade superficial mínimos. A respeito do polimento, o sistema Shiny® mostrou melhores resultados na obtenção de uma superfície polida contra o sistema Enhance®. Na análise qualitativa da interface esmalte-resinas verificou-se que a broca laminada de tungsténio perante dois substratos com propriedades distintas não apresenta um comportamento homogéneo originando defeitos na integridade marginal. Conclusão: A broca laminada origina uma superfície pouco rugosa e, assim, melhor acabamento. A broca diamantada apresenta melhor comportamento quando se desgastam dois substratos distintos, em simultâneo. O sistema Shiny® é mais eficaz no polimento das restaurações e o sistema Enhance® pode produzir defeitos nas superfícies estudadas.
Introduction: The aesthetics and durability of the dental restorations are related to finishing and polishing procedures, where special considerations must be made regarding the surface roughness. This depends of the grinding or cutting instruments, the composite resin properties and operator related factors. Uneven surfaces are more susceptible to plaque accumulation, gingival inflammation, periodontal disease, marginal infiltration of restoration and decay. Objective: Evaluate and investigate the effect of different rotary instruments for finishing and polishing composite restorations used at the University Clinic of the Catholic University of Portugal and examine the areas subject to different types of polishing/finishing, to compare roughness. Materials and Methods: 32 extracted human teeth were prepared with a cavity in a healthy surface. They were divided into groups and restored with the composite resins HRi® (Micerium) and Synergy®D6 (Coltène) and subjected to different methods of finishing and polishing. Surface roughness was evaluated using optical profilometry and studied with SensoScan software 5.3 (SensoTech, S.L.). Statistical analysis was performed using IBM SPPSS software (version 23). Results: For finishing procedures, the laminated drill produces the lower surface roughness in all studied parameters. There were no statistical differences between the resins and it was observed that both present minimum surface roughness values when they are polymerized against a polyester matrix tape. Regarding the polishing procedure, the Shiny® system exhibit better results for obtaining a polished surface in comparison with the Enhance® system. Finally, the qualitative analysis of enamel-resin interface found that the laminated tungsten drill does not work very well in two different substrates and it can cause defects in the marginal integrity. Conclusion: Tungsten carbide (laminated) drill gave a better smoothness and better surface finishing procedure. The diamond (extra fine grit) drill shows better behavior when wearing two different substrates simultaneously. The Shiny system is really more effective in the polishing procedure of the restoration. Enhance system can produce some defects in the studied surfaces.
