Abstract(s)
This report comes within the scope of the Curricular Unit “Final Internship and Report” of the Master's Course in Nursing with Specialization in Child and Pediatric Health Nursing at Universidade Católica Portuguesa, and aims to report in a critical and reflective way the path of acquiring skills to obtain a Master's degree and Specialist in Child and Pediatric Health Nursing. Children and young people have characteristics that predispose them to a greater probability of incidents that compromise their safety. Childhood accidents in the community are an alarming reality and safety incidents in the hospital context remain a problem despite the efforts made in recent decades. Identifying the need for greater attention in this area and understanding that Nursing's intervention is privileged in promoting safe environments for the adequate growth and development of children and youth and for the provision of high quality care, the theme studied in depth throughout this journey was the promotion of child and youth safety. In order to map the family's perception of the safety of care provided to hospitalized children in scientific evidence, I was a co-author in carrying out a scoping review, with its results influencing my intervention approach. My training path was also supported by theoretical concepts, such as the Quality-Care Model© and the Philosophy of Care in Pediatric Nursing. Along the way, internships were carried out in three different contexts, the general objectives of which were defined: “To develop skills as a Specialist Nurse in Child and Pediatric Health Nursing in the different contexts of providing health” and “To develop skills of greater complexity that promote Child and Youth safety in health and disease processes”. As part of the internships, I developed several strategies to promote safety aimed at professionals, families and children, improving the quality of care provided. By carrying out activities within the scope of care provision, management, training and research, it was possible for me to develop the recommended skills of a Master's and Specialist Nurse in Child and Pediatric Health Nursing throughout the training course.
