Abstract(s)
When television became widespread, the potential of the medium became apparent, and it began to play an important role for different societies. In the 21st century, technological innovations have brought a many possibilities, but despite this, television has remained an important source of information, culture and entertainment for the public. In this sense, the representation of historical events through fiction is a way to make the past known, even if the plot is fictional. Thus, this dissertation seeks to analyze portuguese historical fiction. For this, we chose to analyze portuguese series, miniseries and soap operas broadcasted by generalist channels. In this sense, the research was divided into two parts. The first part presents the theoretical framework, supported by the literature review, which deepens the theory of Mediations that helps us to understand the relationship between television and the viewer, and also the history of portuguese television as well as it’s fiction. The second part presents the empirical work, which consisted of a content analysis of 10 fictional products selected in the period between 2011 and 2020. This selection aimed, afterwards, at identifying the titles that were historical fiction, as well as analyzing different parameters through tables defined for that purpose. The main conclusions reveal that there are indeed historical fiction titles, whether they are a series, miniseries or telenovelas. It is also verified that they deal with a more recent period of the country's history, so the repetition of some historical periods is identified in different works. Thus, each of the formats under analysis leads to feelings of nationality.
