Abstract(s)
Apathy refers in the decrease of the capacity of initiative and motivation, the reduction of voluntary behaviors and goal-directed behaviors. Is normally present in individuals with first episode psychosis (FEP) and it is related, sometimes, to the existence of volitional and executive deficits, making that, collectively these disorders are related to a decrease in the functionality and autonomy of the individual. This study aimed investigates, primarily, the presence of apathy in a sample of individuals with FEP and compare it with a sample of healthy individuals (control group). As secondary objectives, it was intended to evaluate and compare executive functioning between the sample of the group of individuals with FEP and the control group as well as to verify if the presence of deficits at the executive levels relates to apathy in both groups. The sample consisted in 45 participants, of both genders, aged between 16 to 45, who were divided into two groups: 30 controls and 15 patients with FEP. All subjects with FEP were treated with antipsychotics according to the doctor assistant specialist in psychiatry. The most important result established that all individuals with FEP presented symptoms of apathy. Significant statistic correlation were not found between the other variables studied.
