Abstract(s)
This master's thesis is about the representation of the refugee crisis in the media. We want to understand how this issue has been studied in journalism, from the perspective of journalists. With the research question "how do journalists perceive their work on the refugee crisis in the media?", we will try to discern what difficulties journalists identify in covering the issue, what are the main obstacles to including the issue on the media agenda, as well as understanding how human rights can relate to journalism, from the perspective of the professional class in question. Basically, the aim is to give a voice to those who usually give the lead to the "others", as well as to understand what is, in our opinion, the great value of journalism: being able to put pertinent issues on the media agenda, assuming itself as a guarantor of human rights. Among other conclusions, we highlight the fact that for journalists this is an issue that deserves more media coverage and that one of the main obstacles is precisely related to the commercial logic of journalism, although the quality of the work produced by the Portuguese media on this issue in recent years is noteworthy in the opinion of the journalists themselves.
