| dc.description.abstract | Recentemente tem sido muito propalada a ideia de que Cristóvão Colombo teria sido português, natural da vila de Cuba, e agente secreto de D. João II, aduzindo como prova sobretudo a toponímia das terras que descobriu. Na realidade, os topónimos que lhe têm sido atribuídos ou não são da sua autoria ou se justificam por razões que as fontes coevas nos explicam. Tampouco há razão para preferir o apelido Colón a Colombo, visto a documentação provar claramente que, sucessivamente, usou ambos. Quanto aos serviços a D. João II, prestou ‑lhe o pior que se poderia imaginar: desviar para o Atlântico, onde entravam facilmente em choque com os interesses portugueses as atenções de uma Espanha unificada voltada para o interior da Península, para o Magrebe e para o Mediterrâneo. | pt_PT |
| dc.description.abstract | The idea that Christopher Columbus would have been Portuguese, born in the town of Cuba, and a secret agent of King John II, has been much publicized in recent times, adducing as evidence above all the place-names given to the lands discovered. In fact, not only the toponymy is entirely of his authorship but it may be justified by reasons explained by coeval sources. Nor is there reason to prefer the surname Colón or Columbus, as the documents clearly prove that he used both. As for the services to King John II, Columbus would have completely deceived him by bringing the attention of Spain from the Iberian Peninsula, the Maghreb and the Mediterranean to the Atlantic against Portuguese interests. | pt_PT |
