Abstract(s)
The idea that Christopher Columbus would have been Portuguese, born in the town of Cuba, and a secret agent of King John II, has been much publicized in recent times, adducing as evidence above all the place-names given to the lands discovered. In fact, not only the toponymy is entirely of his authorship but it may be justified by reasons explained by coeval sources. Nor is there reason to prefer the surname Colón or Columbus, as the documents clearly prove that he used both. As for the services to King John II, Columbus would have completely deceived him by bringing the attention of Spain from the Iberian Peninsula, the Maghreb and the Mediterranean to the Atlantic against Portuguese interests.
