A implementação do “Video Assistant Referee” (VAR) no futebol teve como objetivo principal o crescimento da coerência das decisões dos árbitros, contribuindo assim para uma maior justiça e transparência, contudo a introdução da tecnologia motiva a investigação pela necessidade de compreender o impacto existente na experiência dos adeptos, agentes fundamentais para o sucesso desportivo e económico da modalidade. Partindo da análise da questão de investigação vinculativa a este estudo “De que forma é que a implementação do VAR impacta a experiência dos adeptos?”, seguiu-se uma metodologia quantitativa, através de um inquérito distribuído através das plataformas digitais. O presente estudo baseia-se em 4 dimensões de análise: justiça, transparência, experiência e comportamento. A primeira dimensão, procura compreender se existiu um aumento da perceção de justiça com a implementação do VAR, a transparência afere se através do VAR as decisões de arbitragem tornaram-se mais claras e compreensíveis. A experiência investiga de que forma é que as interrupções causadas pelo VAR, afetam a experiência de assistir aos jogos. Por fim, o comportamento procura analisar se a implementação do VAR teve impacto para nas discussões sobre temas relacionados com a arbitragem. No foro académico, o presente trabalho contribui de forma geral para um incremento de conhecimento acerca da compreensão dos adeptos face ao sistema tecnológico, ampliando o entendimento da interação entre o lado tecnológico e social do desporto, sendo por isso extensivo a outras modalidades, fornecendo assim contributos significativos para os clubes e entidades reguladoras do Futebol em Portugal.
The implementation of the ‘Video Assistant Referee’ (VAR) in football had the main objective of increasing the consistency of refereeing decisions, thus contributing to greater fairness and transparency. However, the introduction of technology motivates research because of the need to understand its impact on the experience of fans, key agents for the sporting and economic success of the sport. Starting by analyzing the research question that underpins this study, ‘How does the implementation of VAR impact the fan experience?’, a quantitative methodology was followed, using a survey distributed via digital platforms. This study is based on four dimensions of analysis: fairness, transparency, experience, and behavior. The first dimension seeks to understand whether there has been an increase in the perception of fairness with the implementation of VAR, while transparency assesses whether refereeing decisions have become clearer and more comprehensible through VAR. Experience investigates how the interruptions caused by VAR affect the experience of watching matches. Finally, behavior seeks to analyze whether the implementation of VAR has impacted discussions about refereeing issues. On an academic level, this work contributes to an increase in knowledge about fans' understanding of the technological system, broadening the understanding of the interaction between the technological and social side of sport and, therefore extending to other disciplines. Thus, it provides significant contributions to football clubs and regulatory bodies in Portugal.
