Andam faunos pelos bosques destaca-se na produção literária de Aquilino Ribeiro pela sugestão do fantástico, registada logo no título, e pela quantidade e variedade de manifestações do mundo greco-latino, pagão e cristão. O recurso aos faunos/Fauno enquadra-se na representação simbólica da força disruptiva do “génio da espécie”, que Aquilino introduz na sua Beira Alta natal de modo a problematizar o “debate entre sensualidade e espiritualidade”. O alegado Fauno, seguido por grupos de discípulas em busca de uma nova ordem moral e religiosa, e perseguido por detractores moralistas e despeitados, também ocasiona um aceso debate eclesiástico sobre a sua existência e pertença a Deus ou ao Diabo. Esta discussão propicia o recurso insistente a um substrato cultural que mistura a teologia com a erudição greco-latina profana, sublinhando equívocos e intolerâncias milenares.
