Business Intelligence (BI) has gained over the years increasingly preponderance in the business world, with companies recognizing their contribution to organizational performance, especially in supporting decision making. In such a competitive and vol-atile market, this concept gains greater prominence for small and medium-sized en-terprises (SMEs), which have greater limitations in acquiring competitive advantage over competitors. Implementing a BI system in these companies is then a way to in-crease the productivity of companies. However, implementation is not an easy pro-cess, and depends on several factors. It is therefore necessary to meet a set of require-ments necessary for effective implementation, mainly targeted at small and medium-sized enterprises. With this study, it is intended to provide basic knowledge on various subjects re-lated to BI and its implementation. The significance of critical success factors is clari-fied, and an investigation is carried out to clarify the most important factors for im-plementing BI in an SME, and their different preponderances. Based on this, a ma-turity model is created with the objective of evaluating the maturity level of a BI sys-tem in an SME. Subsequently, the results of the evaluations were analyzed, and dif-ferent conclusions were drawn. This work can serve as a basis for future investigations into BI applied to SMEs. Despite the growth in BI research, the vast majority do not apply to SMEs, which act as "the engine of the economy" and account for 99% of the Portuguese business fabric.
