A tradução de textos políticos tem sido uma prática habitual ao longo do tempo, mas a sua análise do ponto de vista dos estudos de tradução tem, no entanto, sido marginal. O mesmo acontece com os discursos de Oliveira Salazar traduzidos para língua inglesa. A sua quantidade, justificada pelo longo período de vigência da sua liderança durante o Estado Novo, faria deles candidatos óbvios a um local privilegiado de análise. Tal não se verificou, porém, até agora, de forma sistemática, pretendendo este estudo dar um passo nesse sentido, contribuindo inequivocamente para um conhecimento mais aprofundado do período que decorre entre 1933 e 1949, no que toca às traduções para língua inglesa dos discursos proferidos por Salazar. Os recentes desenvolvimentos da história de tradução, enquanto campo de estudos eminentemente interdisciplinar, com um metadiscurso coerente e vasto, contribuem ativamente para esta investigação, cujo objectivo principal é revelar e compreender a forma como o regime transmitia as suas ideias e princípios a um público estrangeiro, no caso, o britânico. A análise a partir do interior do regime para o estrangeiro constitui uma novidade nos estudos de tradução recentes em Portugal e pretende colmatar uma lacuna existente na pesquisa nos campos da tradução e da sua história. O presente trabalho será orientado pelos objetivos seguintes: (i) compreender o funcionamento do processo de tradução para língua estrangeira de um determinado corpus no Estado Novo, (ii) mapear e descrever o processo de tradução no escopo temporal do trabalho, evidenciando os seus diferentes agentes, (iii) problematizar o conceito de tradução institucional no contexto português, (iv) perceber o papel dos tradutores no processo de tradução, (v) descrever e analisar um corpus de discursos traduzidos para inglês da autoria de Oliveira Salazar recorrendo a uma categorização e metodologia próprias. Esta análise permitirá explicar e interpretar diversos fenómenos tradutológicos. O caráter inovador desta investigação revelar-se-á essencial à abertura de novos itinerários, baseados neste corpus e dados ou em outros, a acrescentar aos que agora se discutem.
The translation of political texts has been a common practice over time, but its analysis has been marginalised from the point of view of translation studies. This is also true of Oliveira Salazar's translated speeches into English. Their persistent and vast existence during his long leadership of the Estado Novo could have placed them in a privileged place for analysis. However, this has not yet occurred in a systematic way, so this study aims to unequivocally contribute to a deeper knowledge of the period between 1933 and 1949, regarding the English translations of Salazar's speeches. The recent developments in the history of translation, as an eminently interdisciplinary field of study with a coherent and vast metadiscourse, allow an active influx to this approach, whose preponderant role is to reveal and understand the way the regime transmitted its ideas and principles to a foreign audience, in this case, a British one. The approach that starts from within the regime is a novelty in recent translation studies in Portugal and thus aims to fill an existing gap in translation and history research. For this reason, this work is guided by the following objectives: (i) to understand the functioning of the translation process into a foreign language of a given corpus in the Estado Novo, (ii) to map and describe the translation process in the timeframe of the work, highlighting its different agents, (iii) to problematise the concept of institutional translation in the Portuguese context, (iv) to understand the role of translators in the translation process, (v) to describe and analyse a corpus of speeches by Oliveira Salazar translated into English using a methodology design of its own. This analysis results in the explanation and interpretation of translatological phenomena and diverse variations. The exploratory nature of this research remains to open new itineraries, based on this corpus and data, or others to be added.
