Abstract(s)
In the era of the digital revolution, driven by the emergence of the internet, communication has undergone profound changes. Thus, the ways of disseminating knowledge were adapted to the media platforms that appeared in the online world. More recently, mobile technologies, such as smartphones and tablets, have transformed the daily Internet experience, further integrating digital media into the flow of everyday life. In this context, the Internet has established itself as a tool for communication and even artistic creation. This practice gave rise to new media art, the art that designates all projects that use emerging technologies and that focus on the cultural, aesthetic and political possibilities of the new tools. Those responsible for the virtual communicational dynamics are the new media art artists themselves, as well as other professionals of the arts and cultural agents, mainly related to Portuguese cultural and artistic institutions. Creators share their art pieces on their websites and social media through their own means. Institutions, such as museums or galleries, also have a fundamental role in structuring this equipment in the online environment, through the use of digital media. This dissertation serves to understand the communication strategies used by artists, initiatives and cultural and artistic institutions, as well as their effectiveness. Thus, the empirical investigation was based on interviews with new media art artists, curators/artistic directors and professors specializing in communication, digital art and museology. In the present investigation it was concluded that, digital media are the main vehicles for the communication of new media art works, used by art professionals, as they share a fundamental characteristic - the digital environment.
