In an era of constant and multifaceted communication, the distinction between the various strands of this field of study is becoming increasingly blurred. This study analyses the growing interdependence between journalism and media relations in Portugal, using the luxury watch brand Panerai as a case study. The analysis was conducted using a qualitative methodology that combined semi-structured interviews with four professionals—two press officers and two journalists—selected for their experience in the luxury watch market and for their representation across different career levels; six months of participatory observation during an internship at a communications agency; and content analysis of news stories about Panerai, with the aim of understanding the interaction between brand promotion and journalistic production, identifying the ethical challenges of this dynamic. The research showed that media relations are a fundamental pillar for the Panerai brand, serving as a key link between the company and the media. The study also concluded that influence through media relations is not a form of manipulation, but rather a consequence of a solid and ethical collaborative relationship. It is through this functional interdependence, based on transparency and trust, that PR can effectively promote the brand, while journalism maintains its commitment to credible reporting, shaping the public's informed and positive perception.
