Abstract(s)
Introduction: Cancer is one of the leading causes of death globally, and it also affects children and adolescents. Therefore, with the increase in survivors, it is essential for caregivers and health professionals to be aware of treatment-related oral complications, promoting early detection and maintaining oral hygiene to improve quality of life. Objective: Evaluate the oral condition in pediatric cancer survivors; Identify the most prevalent oral manifestations. Create a medical-dental follow-up guide for pediatric cancer survivors. Materials and methods: A digital questionnaire was administered to pediatric cancer survivors. The data was statistically analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences® (SPSS). Development of a guide for dental consultations with pediatric cancer survivors based on existing literature. Results: The study was applied to a sample, resulting in a response rate of 43%. The majority (44,4%) of survivors reported not having much knowledge about the oral manifestations resulting from cancer treatments. Tooth sensitivity, changes in tooth color and texture and caries were the most prevalent oral changes reported. Around 40% reported a moderate impact on quality of life, especially emotional well-being. Dental medical follow-up proved to be insufficient, with many survivors (42,9%) not receiving instructions on oral hygiene or having easy access to specialized dental care. Most of the participants (71,4%) consider it important for the dentist to be integrated into the hospital team accompanying the child. Conclusions: Oral alterations are common in survivors and tend to be underappreciated. Despite the perceived moderate impact, there is a lack of specialized care. It is therefore important to integrate dentists into multidisciplinary teams and implement clinical protocols that ensure prevention, ongoing follow-up and more education.
