This dissertation aimed to explore the challenges and opportunities associated with sport participation in residential care from the perspectives of young people and the professionals who support them. Building on previous research, the study sought to deepen and critically reflect on earlier findings by presenting them back to participants and discussing their current experiences. A qualitative, exploratory and interpretative approach was adopted. Data were collected through one focus group with residential care staff and individual semi-structured interviews with young people in residential care and technical professionals from two residential care institutions, involving a total of 13 participants. Data were analysed using thematic analysis. The findings highlight that sport is perceived as an important contributor to physical and psychological well-being, emotional regulation, personal development, autonomy, responsibility and social skills, while also functioning as a protective factor. Despite these benefits, participants identified several barriers, including financial and human resource constraints, transport and logistical difficulties, time management and the challenge of balancing sport with school demands. Facilitating strategies included the support of professionals and peers, institutional flexibility, trial sessions and partnerships with community organisations. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the role of sport in residential care, reinforcing the need to promote more inclusive opportunities tailored to young people's needs, while highlighting the value of participatory approaches in both research and professional practice.
