This study aims to understand the role of social support in the unexpected loss of a child, focusing on a systemic dimension of the grieving process. Due to the complexity and sensitivity of the topic, the qualitative methodology guided by the principles of Grounded Theory was adopted. Thus, socio-demographic questionnaires and semi-structured interviews were carried out on three mothers who unexpectedly lost a child, who were supported by a local association. Through their testimonies, we found that the negative impact of this loss is what stands out both in the immediate and the long term, showing us the profound suffering of these mothers. Only in the long term are positive transformations resulting from the loss reported, on the personal level and in the maternal role. The most valued social support refers to the emotional support provided by the nuclear family and other significant personal relationships. However, the obstacles to social support stemming from the context and circumstances of death are more evident. These results contribute to the understanding of the participants' unique experience in the morning process of the unexpected death of their children and how the accessibility of social support and its adjustment to their particular needs are relevant.
