Abstract(s)
This Activities Report, analyzes and reflects the course accomplished at the level of the Master's Degree in Nursing, in the area of specialization in Medical-Surgical Nursing, taught by the Instituto das Ciencias da Saúde – Universidade Católica Portuguesa (ICS-UCP), based on acquisition and development of competences described in the General Regulation of the Master's Degree in Nursing of a professional nature. In this process of acquisition and development of skills, in addition to the theoretical component, this also had a practical component in the final stage and report curricular unit. This my path in the practical component was divided into two distinct Stage sites, a Specialized Intensive Care Unit and a Continuous and Palliative Care Unit. Transversally to both stages, my intervention aimed to reflect and analyze the promotion of comfort as the maximum in nursing care. To comfort or to promote comfort has always been associated with the act of caring, as Nightingale (1946) and Collière (1999) remind us. It has been traditionally linked to the physical dimension of the person, and it seems to be a much broader process, namely when it is defined as a care process that aims to contribute to a patient's holistic comfort, encompassing the physical, psycho-spiritual, sociocultural and environmental dimensions as stated by Kolcaba (2003). As a practice of nursing care and unquestionable and indispensable need to preserve human dignity and the quality of life of the person cared for, it became pertinent to define as central theme - Comfort, Nursing Care. This document highlights the responsibility of the Specialist Nurse to the society that integrates it, that is, as Specialist Nurses we have an increased responsibility to reflect on social problems and our professional practices, with another critical view in order to improve the quality of health care and consequently the indicators of quality in health with the main focus being the person cared for.
