The national reality regarding road safety and accident claims is still not ideal and as desired. In such an evolved society, always at the forefront of the technology, there are still losses of lives and high costs that are possible to be diminished. Thus, this report and the research carried out at Ascendi aim to study the socio-economic costs of heavy vehicle accidents on the A25 highway, with the purpose of considering and subsequently implementing measures that lead to a decrease in the number of losses and their costs in this concession of the company. Contacts were established with national entities, such as Guarda Nacional Republicana, the Associação Nacional dos Transportadores Públicos Rodoviários de Mercadorias and JLS-transportes internacionais, which proved to be extremely important not only for the validation of the information obtained from the databases, but also to obtain knowledge regarding the reality of the accidents in the A25. It was then possible to calculate the socioeconomic cost of the heavy accidents that occurred on the A25 motorway, from 2015 to 2017. The total cost of € 20,181,624 (average cost per accident of € 88,906) reveals the impact and importance of this issue, not only for Ascendi, but also for other entities, such as the Portuguese State. The report is concluded by suggesting some measures, which have a favorable cost-benefit ratio, capable of improving the current situation. It is expected that they will be applied in the near future and that their usefulness can be proven by reducing accident costs and reducing the number of accidents and victims.
