Os Meios de Comunicação Eletrónicos ocupam um papel central na vida dos jovens, sendo que as figuras parentais assumem um papel crucial nesta utilização. O presente estudo teve como principal objetivo explorar o papel da qualidade das relações familiares no conhecimento parental do uso de MCE. A amostra foi constituída por 163 jovens e respetivos pais/cuidadores. A análise de dados baseou-se na comparação dos relatos destes participantes face à utilização de MCE por parte dos jovens e à exploração da sua associação com variáveis sociodemográficas e com a qualidade das relações parentais. Para a recolha de dados foram utilizados dois protocolos de avaliação, um destinado a pais/cuidadores (MAFParent Report; Ficha Sociodemográfica e de Uso dos MCE e Questionário de Avaliação das Relações Familiares Básicas-QERFB) e outro destinado a jovens (MAF-Youth Self-Report e
Ficha Sociode gográfica e de Uso de MCE). Os resultados indicam que, quanto melhor a qualidade das relações parentais, menor a perceção de pais/cuidadores e filhos de impacto negativo da utilização de MCE por parte dos jovens e maior o seu nível de acordo acerca desta dimensão. Estes resultados destacam a importância da qualidade das relações parentais, sendo necessários estudos futuros que os possam aprofundar e complementar.
The electronic media occupy a central role in youngsters’ life, thus enhancing the parents role in its usage. This study had as a main objective to explore the link between the quality of family relations and the usage of EM. The sample was constituted by 163 youngsters and their respective parents/caretakers. The data analysis was based on their testimonies regarding the usage of EM by youngsters, its relations with sociodemographic variables and the quality of parental relations. The data was gathered through two assessment protocols, one focused on parents/caretakers (MAF – Parent Report; Sociodemographic Inquiry and of EM usage and Basic Family Relations Inquiry) and the other on youngsters (MAF – Youth Self-Report and Sociodemographic Inquiry and of EM usage). The results point to the fact that, the better family relations are, the minor is the perception of negative impacts related to EM usage both by parents/caretakers and youngsters and the bigger is the level of agreement on this topic. These results highlight the importance of quality of family relations, notwithstanding further studies are necessary to deepen and complement them.
