Abstract(s)
No caso
Every woman goes through and feels a Voluntary Termination of Pregnancy (VTP) as na unique and most individual experience. It is the author’s view that more than a medical issue, VTP is a social issue where the support provided under the relevant legal framework (Law no.16/2007) may not appropriately answer the complexity of the situation. This survey aims to understand what the advice and support provided throughout a VTP decision process means for pregnant women in discernment and, consequently, understand the role played by the Social Work during that process. We chose to make a qualitative methodological survey spread across two moments: an exploratory study conducted in a Public Hospital in the district of Lisbon, in order to learn about the VTP reality in a hospital context; a case study of an emergency helpline to support any pregnant woman having second thoughts regarding her pregnancy. We conducted interviews to six women who called the helpline and to six professionals of the technical team answering the helpline. According to the data collected, the decision to terminate or proceed with the pregnancy is influenced by social, personal and relational reasons. Where the woman decides to go ahead with the pregnancy, the influencing factors relate mostly to personal reasons (life expectations and plans) and, where she decides to terminate the pregnancy, they mostly relate to social reasons (work and economic situation). The ambivalence of feelings and emotions felt by women at this stage should be noted, the same way as the solitude they feel, a fact which strengthens their need of being duly supported and followed up. It is expected that a professional who will follow up a woman in discernment will create an emphatic relationship with her and that his/her focus will be the woman’s desires and motivations. It is suggested that he/she will echo and repeat what is stated by the woman, in order to make her hear what she is saying and thereby reach her own conclusion. The information transmitted shall take the woman’s emotional condition and what she is prepared to listen into account.
