Abstract(s)
The concern about patient safety and, consequently, the quality of care provided, has grown over the last few years. Medication errors in the pediatric context are a major concern of nurses, given the increased vulnerability of this population. Thus, the Nurse’s intervention in promoting error prevention strategies in the administration of medication to the child is essential. The following report arises within the Master’s Degree in Nursing, in the area of specialization in Child and Pediatric Health Nursing, in order to describe and critically reflect on the training path developed in the acquisition of skills of Specialist Nurse in Child and Pediatric Health Nursing. To theoretically strengthen the problem and to base any decision making, the Quality-Care Model© by Joanne Duffy and Lois Hoskins was used. “To develop competencies as a Specialist Nurse in Child and Pediatric Health in the provision of care in the different contexts of practice with a focus on promoting their quality and safety” was outlined as the objective throughout the different stages. Thus, with a focus on training needs and after the situational diagnosis, specific objectives were planned in each context of the internship and activities were developed with the aim of acquiring common skills of a Specialist Nurse and specific skills of a Specialist Nurse in Child and Pediatric Health, as well as a master’s skills. In the context of Inpatient Pediatrics, among the various activities carried out, the elaboration of a procedures’ guideline on the double verification of therapy stands out, as well as the holding of a training session for the nursing team. In addition, a training poster on the safe use of the medication was also made. In the context of a Family Health Unit, the development of a flowchart outlining the course of action in an anaphylactic reaction after vaccination and, respectively, a training session for the nursing team. Information leaflets for parents on child safety have also been developed. Lastly, in the context of Pediatric Urgency, the activities were directed towards the implementation of prevention strategies of the therapeutic error towards the child, through the elaboration of tables with all the important information of the therapy used in that context.
