Abstract(s)
Introduction: The increase in disease burden at the end of life, particularly in aging populations, highlights the urgent need for effective palliative care. This care aims to improve the quality of life for patients with incurable and progressive diseases, as well as for their families. However, the success of palliative care significantly depends on the knowledge, attitudes, and skills of healthcare professionals. In this context, it becomes crucial to assess the knowledge of the professionals involved to ensure that the care provided meets the specific needs of patients at the end of life. Methodology: This is an observational, cross-sectional study with a non-probabilistic convenience sample, targeting healthcare professionals and others working in services that deal directly with palliative patients in an acute hospital and primary healthcare settings. Specific questionnaires were applied, consisting of 60 items for health professionals and 53 items for other non-clinical professionals, covering different domains of palliative care to assess knowledge. The study received ethical approval and was conducted in the form of an e-survey. Results: The results indicated that knowledge about palliative care among health professionals and other professionals is insufficient in several domains. The perception of insufficiency in knowledge and skills was evident. There was also an urgent need identified to improve training and competence in palliative care for all professionals involved. Conclusions: The study concludes that it is essential to implement continuous training programs in palliative care, focusing not only on increasing theoretical knowledge but also on developing practical and communication skills. The implementation of health policies that ensure universal access to palliative care and specialized training for professionals are essential steps to improve the quality of care offered to patients at the end of life.
