Crianças do género feminino favorecem a Médica Dentista (86,3%; p=0.000) e a bata branca (80,0%; p=0,008).
Introduction: Despite the many advances in the Pediatric Dentistry, the biggest challenge for any Dentist is to reduce the anxiety related to dental appointment and to make the child understand, accept and collaborate during treatment. Aim: Characterize the sociodemographic data, hygiene and oral health habits of the pediatric dentistry patient, record the children preferences for the most empathic image of the Dentist and analyze their correlation with the various variables. Methods: A questionnaire was distributed in one school, two kindergartens and at the UCP University Clinic. Results: 200 children were included (105 males) between 3 and 10 years old. Regarding the Pediatric Dentist gender, 70.5% preferred the female dentist. Children who sought the clinician, in case of toothache, maintained choice (77.8%; p=0.001). Girls prefer the female dentist (86.3%, p=0.000) also the white lab coat is their favourite (80.0%, p=0.008). Those who belong to traditional families have a predilection for the conventional protective mask (49.7%), while the pediatric mask prevails in other family categories (p=0.031). Children who often practise their oral hygiene opt for the conventional mask (50.0%, p = 0.026). Those who have been at the dental appointment in the past, elect the white lab coat (68.2%), while those who have never been prefer the blue coat (66.7%, p = 0.018). Conclusions: The results obtained in this study demonstrate that children have very specific perceptions and preferences regarding the dentist appearance. These results are important information to take into account by each pediatric dentist that desires to improve their doctor-patient relationship with children.
