Abstract(s)
Communication of bad news in nursing care brings together the learning processes and experiences which enabled a specialist nurse working in the area of medical-surgical nursing to develop skills and it describes the whole process in a critical, reflective and reasoned manner, emphasizing what has been developed in a practical context. Through a brief overlook of the career and the presentation of several situations experienced in the context of clinical practice, this report intends to demonstrate how the activities and strategies developed contributed to the acquisition and development of skills and it reveals their main contributions towards advanced nursing. Communication, being an essential variable in nursing care, was the overall theme and driving force during this journey. Another support was provided by the theoretical orientations of Afaf Meleis and Jean Watson. Communication of bad news in nursing care begins with a systematic literature review, which is being analyzed by a scientific journal in the area of nursing, so as to achieve a better understanding and obtain greater knowledge about communication strategies used by nurses in the process of communicating bad news, the results having been shared with the multidisciplinary team during the training course which was organized, intending to attain a continuous improvement in health care. Additionally, it describes the main activities developed over five years in Intensive Care Units, which provided accreditation for module II. Within the scope of clinical practice developed in the Chronic Pain Unit, it emphasizes the creation of a registering instrument, in electronic format, which is awaiting approval, as well as the design and implementation of two educational and training leaflets for the health area and the preparation of a poster on facilitating communication strategies. Finally, it portrays the career in the general emergency department, drawing attention to the unpredictability of situations and, as a consequence, the large number of cases of breaking bad news to the client and/or family.
