Abstract(s)

Available new financing methods are explained, studied and introduced as alternative ways to allow a cultural institution to decrease its dependence on state funding and rigid income timeframes. With that intent, a comparison is made between the usual financing methodologies available to for-profit organizations and ONGs, establishing parallels and obtaining useful knowledge applicable to the institution in study. Various alternatives to the rigid state-funding scheme are put forward in this work. Crowdfunding and European Union’s Europa Criativa fund are presented as the most promising alternatives available, as well as a general reorganization effort by the institution to adapt its activity plan to the available Quadro Estratégico Comum fund. A review of competing and non-competing cultural and educational institutions is made, providing a good understanding of the available options and possible avenues to grow the funding breadth available to this kind of organization. We conclude that the Fundação de Serralves search for new forms of funding, since the support of the state representing 45% of total funding. Adapting to the new reality of applications from EU funds, analyzing your business plan, creating networks of organizations in order to compete for these funds and finally, measure the participation of the public of the Fundação de Serralves like a way to get results without never forget the need for innovation in fundraising, when looking for patrons and donors.
