Os Cuidados Paliativos devem ser prestados por uma equipa interdisciplinar com
formação especializada, pois somente assim podem ser atendidas todas as necessidades
do doente e da família.
O trabalho do Terapeuta da Fala está relacionado com muitos dos sintomas
apresentados pelos doentes que recebem Cuidados Paliativos: como a disfagia,
odinofagia, desidratação e as perturbações da comunicação.
É função do Terapeuta da Fala contribuir para a maximização da deglutição,
adaptação ou preservação da alimentação por via oral, como também auxiliar o doente a
adequar a comunicação, contribuindo para manter a sua interação familiar e social.
Ainda são poucos os Terapeutas da Fala nas equipas de Cuidados Paliativos em
Portugal mas a contribuição deste profissional já é indiscutível.
O alívio do sofrimento do doente e da família e a promoção da qualidade vida são
dos principais objetivos dos Cuidados Paliativos e estes temas também são questões que
envolvem o trabalho do Terapeuta da Fala.

The speech and language patologist works to contribute to maximize the swollowing, preserve the oral alimentation as well to adequate his communication, so the patient can still interact with his family and his social life. There are fewer speech and language pathologist in the multidisciplinary team of palliative care but their work and contribution are very important. The goals of the palliative care is to realif, alliviate symptoms and improve quality of life for both the sick person and his family, that is one part of the speech and language pathologist.
