Abstract(s)
Introduction: Nurses are often health professionals who have the first contact with patients. The general population tends to be more concerned with their physical health than with oral health. Thus, nurses are one of the primary agents in the mission of educating patients in the various aspects of health and also in promoting oral health and preventing oral diseases. Objectives: Evaluate the oral health attitudes and behavior of nursing students. Materials and Methods: Cross-sectional study with a random sample of 289 nursing students who attended Health School of Center Region. Data collection was carried out through a self-administered questionnaire on oral health attitudes and behaviors, which included the Hiroshima University Dental Behavior Inventory (HUDBI), followed by an intra-oral inspection. Results: We found that 71,6% of students adopted appropriate oral health attitudes and behaviors. The average of HUDBI scores was 7,3 ± 12, which increased according to the year of the course, however there were no statically significant differences. It was also found that students whose parents were health professionals had better HUDBI scores. Conclusion: The results are consistent with national and international research, confirming that the attitudes and behaviors of nursing students with regard to oral health are adequate. However, the relationship between sociodemographic variables, risk behaviors and oral health surveillance has not been confirmed. It is suggested that education programs should be implemented for newly graduated nurses, as well as encouraging routine check-up consultations where instructions and motivation for good oral hygiene will be given and also provide alert to risk factors for oral diseases.
