A dentição decídua é de extrema importância porque para além de auxiliar na mastigação, fonética e estética, guia e mantém o espaço na arcada para a erupção dos dentes permanentes. Porém, esta dentição temporária pode ser perdida precocemente devido a cárie, trauma, infeção… Para minimizar o impacto desta perda no perímetro da arcada devemos atuar para ser possível a manutenção destas dimensões do espaço. Com esse objetivo são usados mantenedores de espaço que podem ser fixos, a um extremo ou dois extremos, ou removíveis. São colocados em boca até à erupção do(s) dente(s) permanente(s) sucessor(es). Estes impedem a movimentação dos dentes adjacentes para o espaço edêntulo, desta forma prevenindo-se a redução do perímetro da arcada, as erupções ectópicas, as impactações dos dentes definitivos, o apinhamento dentário e mordidas cruzadas, entre outros. Podemos, usando os mantenedores de espaço, resolver um problema ou se não o conseguirmos resolver de forma definitiva, no mínimo conseguimos minorar as suas consequências.

For this purpose, space maintainers are used that can be fixed, to one or two ends, or removable. They are placed in the mouth until the successor permanent tooth erupts. These prevent the movement of adjacent teeth into the edentulous space, thus preventing a reduction in the arch's perimeter, ectopic eruptions, impactation of the definitive teeth, dental crowding, cross bites. Using space maintainers we can fix a problem or at least minimize it´s consequences
