Abstract(s)
Introduction: School age is a critical period when children develop their personality and habits which are perpetuated for the rest of their life. Teachers are seen by their students as examples and as figures of authority. There is a lack of knowledge and training of teachers about oral health and dental trauma, which block them from being good oral health educators. Objectives: Characterize the knowledge, habits and attitudes of teachers about oral hygiene and dental trauma and evaluate the influence of sociodemographic and preventive variables. It is also intended to formulate a project to train teachers in oral health. Material and Methods: A descriptive, observational, cross-sectional epidemiological study was designed with 204 teachers from the school groups that are part of Centro de Formação EduFor. The data were collected through an online questionnaire in order to characterize the sociodemographic variables, variables of the teachers’ knowledge in oral health, variables related to preventive oral health and variables related to the teachers’ attitudes towards dental trauma. Results: A descriptive, observational, cross-sectional epidemiological study was designed with 204 teachers from the school groups that belong to Centro de Formação EduFor. The data were collected through an online questionnaire in order to characterize the sociodemographic variables, variables of the teachers’ knowledge in oral health, variables related to preventive oral health and variables related to the teachers’ attitudes towards dental trauma. Conclusion: The teachers of lower levels showed better knowledge in the area of oral hygiene and the first cycle teachers would act more correctly if facing dental trauma of permanent teeth. It was found that training in first aid did not improve the attitude of teachers towards oral traumatology. It was concluded that teachers needed and are interested in receiving oral health training.
