This dissertation falls within the field of conservation and restoration of paintings on canvas. The study investigates the search for methods that reconcile stability and optical compatibility in chromatic reintegration, focusing on the technical and ethical requirements for intervention in paintings of various types. The research begins by analyzing the gaps and challenges associated with chromatic reintegration, technically, aesthetically, and ethically, and focuses on the study of Paraloid B-72® Retouching gels, developed by Peter Koneczny between 2007 and 2010. These gels have specific rheological properties that allow for the control of viscosity, gloss, and texture during application, providing the simultaneous ability to fill and reintegrate color. The main objective was to evaluate the performance of these gels as a technical and aesthetic alternative to traditionally used materials, verifying their suitability for different pictorial contexts. The results indicate that Paraloid B-72® Retouching gels have good optical stability, provide good control of texture and gloss, and allow the incorporation of structural filling and reintegration functions in a single application. They have proven to be most effective in oil painting, but in contemporary works their application requires careful evaluation due to the sensitivity of modern binders and interaction with solvents.
