Abstract(s)
Research on the evaluation of the effectiveness of Therapeutic Communities for the treatment of problematic drug use shows very divergente results, in which there is few consensus regarding the indicators and methods used. These usually exclude from the evaluations a dimension focused on the former patients perspectives about implemented programms and factors that, in these programs, most contributed to the sucess or failure of the intervention outcomes. Thus, the following study persuits to gather evidence about the outcomes effectiveness on the Portage program implemented by Cleanic in Portugal, from the perspectives from its former patients about treatment experiences and intervention process, focusing on three major dimensions: personal journey; program experience satisfaction; and social support background. Based on a qualitative methodology, semi structured interviews were conducted to 9 participants, 5 men and 4 women, aged between 22 and 52 years old. Results show that all participants are abstinente, the majority for a long period of more tha 5 years. As for the program satisfaction on a relational dimension, participants evaluate positively the relationship between peers and with the staff. Nevertheless, in classifying the treatment as quite challenging, all participants strongly recommend the program. Finally, most participants claim that availability of social support and a strong network support, increase better results for treatment.
