Abstract(s)
The present study aims to understand what psychological well-being means for the elderly who experience successful aging. The sample included 11 Portuguese participants. The research is build-on a qualitative methodology, and semi-structured interviews were carried out. A semi-inductive content analysis was then performed, supported by N-Vivo11® software. In this study the experience of well-being in the elderly appears associated with the dimensions of Ryff (1989), expressed through the environment domain (type of activities, problems management and impact of the place of residence), more referenced dimension. Then, the positive relationship with others (expressed by the categories friends, family and love to give), the self-acceptance (referring to positive attitudes to life and self), personal growth (through new learning, contact with people and the need for financial resources management), autonomy (opinions management and resistance to social pressures), and finally life goals (maintaining health, watching the development of the family and performing short term personal activities). It also notes that there are individual circumstances in what constitutes the well-being and differences according sex and education. Implications of the results are mentioned, as well as the limitations of the study and suggestions for future research.
