Abstract(s)
Health professionals in primary health care units not only assist people at all stages of their life cycle, but there is also the possibility of performing a surgical intervention with the purpose of a bowel elimination ostomy which is evident in any human being. This report describes briefly the activities developed during the internship, consisting of three modules, of the Master Course in Nursing with Specialization in Community Nursing, which took place in a Group of Health Centers in the Porto area. This course provided the development of specialized skills in community nursing, based on the methodology of health planning. The health diagnosis sought to assess the level of knowledge that nurses and primary care physicians have about bowel elimination ostomies. To reach this aim, a quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional study has been considered. The surveyed population consisted of 205 professionals, and the sample consisted of 27 participants. After the application of a questionnaire, we concluded that 78% of the participants reported did not have any specific training in bowel elimination ostomies; 74% showed lack of knowledge about the shotgun barrel stoma; 41% did not have enough knowledge about the appliances and accessories, and still in relation to this item, 30% had no opinion formed on the subject. Finally, 70% of the professionals stated that in the place where they perform functions there was no health professional who they could appeal in case of doubt. During the intervention phase, a training session was planned and the desired goal was achieved with a professional´s knowledge increase of 60%. Nevertheless, it was evident that there is the need to continue the intervention by establishing partnerships with other entities, and therefore the development of medium / long-term projects, such as the "Good Practices Handbook" and "Telehealth in Stomatherapy", will be pursued in the future.
