Abstract(s)
This dissertation has as its theme the study and conservative intervention in a gilded and polychrome carving structure, from the Baroque era and the consequent reflection on the associated deontological issues. The impact of previous interventions on the conservation status will be discussed, in addition to how they were studied and removed. This project counts with the guidance of Prof. Dr. Nuno Camarneiro and co-direction of Dr. Carla Felizardo and the practical work was developed in the workshops of the Conservation and Restoration Center of the UCP. The main issues of this project were the removal of the overpaints to which the piece was subjected and the scarcity of documentation relating to retable structures, in general, and regarding the work under study. The intervention had a conservative aspect, in the sense that its objectives were: the end of the degradation processes, the restitution of function and to remove all overpaint layers as well. The advanced state of degradation of the support justified the structural intervention performed, through its partial disassembly and subsequent reinforcement. To give an adequate response to the overpaint issue, it was necessary to define a methodology for sustainable and conscientious intervention informed by theories defended by authors such as Cesare Brandi, Salvador Muñoz Viñas, Barbara Applebaum and Stephan Michalski, among others, so that the intervention enhanced the piece’s artistic, aesthetic, and cultural values, respecting the ethical guidelines of conservation and restoration. The ideological study of these authors allowed the examination of some of the deontological determinants inherent to conservation and restoration treatments, the ethical principles of this profession, the applicability of their suggestions and, based on this information, establish an intervention methodology aimed at conservation of the in question.
