O modernismo entende-se, geralmente, como um movimento artístico iniciado pelo desenvolvimento rápido das sociedades industriais modernas ou pela urbanização acelerada durante as primeiras décadas do século XX. Embora esta suposição sejaprincipalmente correta, pode-se encontrar alguns casos significativos que sugerem o oposto. Modernism is generally seen as an artistic movement shaped or initiated by the rapid development of modern industrial societies or by the fast urbanization during the first decades of the 20th century. Although this assumption is correct, we can find some significant cases that suggest the opposite. The main objective of this article is to show that the little modernist magazine Orpheu was thought – mainly by Fernando Pessoa – as a historical key-‐‑moment for the sociocultural modernization of Portugal.
