Participation in sport has been recognised as an environment that promotes positive development and well-being amongst young people. However, there remains a lack of research focusing on the sporting experiences of young people in residential care, particularly in Portugal. The aim of this study was to understand how young people in residential care experience sport, focusing on their perceptions of subjective well-being and satisfaction with sport at different stages of the activity (training vs. competition). A qualitative methodology was employed, using a single-case study with event-based measurements, involving a 15-year-old young person in residential care and their coach. Data collection included semi-structured interviews with the young person and the coach, event-based interviews conducted before and after training sessions and competitions, systematic observation, and the administration of a well-being and satisfaction scale. The data were analysed using reflective thematic analysis. The results suggest that participation in sport plays a significant role in the participant’s life, promoting experiences of well-being, satisfaction, skills development and positive interpersonal relationships. The differences between the training and competition contexts proved to be negligible. These results reinforce the potential of sport as a context that promotes the holistic development of young people in residential care and highlight the contribution of event-based measures to understanding their subjective experiences within a sporting context.
